Mr Movie rating: 4 bags Armageddon is the second celestial disaster movie of the summer The first Deep Impact had zero impact on the critics including this one but it packed a box-office wallop raking in almost $136 million since its May 8 opening Deep Impact was about a small comet screeching through the solar system on a collision course with Earth Armageddon differs slightly its premise has an asteroid the size of Texas threatening to do the same thing not the only place these films part company The draw for both films are scenes of mass destruction In a to beat the competition to the big screen Deep Impact producer Steven Spielberg and director Mimi Leder skimped on the special effects erry Bruckheimer file producer of Armageddon did it right His effects are eye-popping And let's face it movies like these are about chaos and devastation what makes them appealing Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock loaded this film with state-of-the-art images The view of the asteroid hurtling to Earth is spectacular Rock and debris slash through space as they follow the main body of the doomsday asteroid toward the planet The sets of the astronauts actually on the asteroid are eerie Bruckheimer's special-effects units fill the screen with a landscape of huge spikes and rock formations that literally are out of this world You've never seen anything like the effect is quite mesmerizing Early in the film the producers focus on meteors showering the Earth They whoosh in from space huge balls of fire that blast everything in their path to smithereens The special effects here are tantalizing but not original already seen the tower of the Empire State Building fall and splatter on the sidewalk Godzilla did it and the same thing happened in Independence Day As meteors hit taxis and cars are blown sky high explosions rock the land and people die It's mass-produced mass destruction and quite frankly the concept has become a bore To their credit Bruckheimer and Bay did let us see the destruction of Paris which been done in other movies The setting is different but the effect is same Knight-Ridder Tribune Mr Movie by Gary Wolcott same The script isn't much better Armageddon which runs long at 2Vt hours sticks every cliffhanging nail-biting trick in the book into the film The heroes are at the point of death and failure from the time they blast off until the end of the film The movie seemlessly slips from one contrived death-defying glue-you-to-the edge-of-your-seat crisis to another until about ready to holler I'll shamelessly admit that I'm usually a sucker for this kind of movie However Armageddon at times is even a bit much for me Bruce Willis heads an ensemble cast featuring Ben Affleck (Good Will HuntmgX Billy Bob Thornton Slingblade) Liv Tyler her band Aerosmith does a song in the film Will Patton and the always way-out-there-somewhere Steve Buscemi Willis tosses his usual stoic macho routine aside and actually plays a three-dimensional character Oh still a live-on-the-edge action hero but at least in Armageddon he plays a character that's believable and you can care about Hey very good in this movie as is the rest of the cast I got a little tired of Buscemi His overth e-top crazed crackpot is wearing thin But Buscemi was added for comic relief which this kind of a movie always needs to be believable However it's Peter Storemare (he teamed with Buscemi as one of the killers in Fargo) who steals the show as a space-drunk Russian astronaut been alone too long in the void Het hilarious and keeps Armageddon from being as dry and matter-of-fact as Deep Impact was The rest of the misfit cast of oil-drillers is interchangeable with a dozen other actors Affleck is a hot commodity so help the movie's box-office draw However he adds 11 at St Josephy Catholic Church 520 Garfield St Kennewick The singing group that wi be accompanied by an orchestra at the 9 am and 11 am July 12 church seraoes at St end-of-the-world movies like Independence Day got but it's better than average And it's going to soak up most of the mid-summer bucks at the box office and that's the name of the game it? Out of Sight George Clooney finally hits his movie stride in the entertaining and well-conceived Out of Sight a bank robber who falls headfirst for an FBI agent Jennifer Lopez His story is told in
