In 1 THE BOSTON RED SOX, not to mention thousands of avid baseball fans, art eagerly awaiting the latent. word from Thumpin' Ted Williams concerning his future plans relative to the diamond One of the titters many persons, especially hi the Red So front if flee, believed to be holding op Ted's oltlmate decision his pend lot drrerce was removed yesterday as the split with hlswife was made official and the divorce was granted. Should the couple be able to rente to a quick financial and property settlement.

It msy not be too tong before Williams again dons his Boston uniform. To the Boston club, he has the appearance of a knight In shining armor After a brave start, the Sox have dropped 15 of their last 18 games. They have been shut out six times during that period, and they have scored only 32 runs an average of 1.78 per game. Just to compound the problems ef freshman Manager Mike Hlg gins, the man who has been filling in for Williams in left field, Faye Throneberry. Is out with a shoulder separation.

The readiest prescription a team could have In such a situation Is spelled I I A S. Aside from the Red Sox' personal Interest, the rest of the American League would welcome Ted back because he la the best drawing card In their circuit. The New York Yankees Bob Turley and Moose Skowron, Cleveland's Herb Score and Detroit's Kapital K's, Al Kaline and Harvey Kuenn. are mere tyros, compared to Ted, at bringing In the fans. Opposing pitchers will not be quite so happy to see the splinter, but theirs la the meager compensation of knowing that, much as he hurts you, he will hurt six other clubs just as much.

If Ted does come back, he obviously will not be ready to step into the lineup tomorrow or the next day. Just how soon he can be In shape will depend upon how much he has been working out while waiting for his personal af fairs to jiettle themselves. If Ted had baseball in the back of his mind, he probably at least has been keeping his hands toughened up and has been swinging a bat occasionally. It was his hands that save him trouble when he returned from his second stint in the Marine Air Force In 1953. Williams rejoined the Sox on July 29, made his first pinch hitting appearance (popping up) eight days later and didn't start a game until Aug.

16. Last year, after breaking his collarbone on his first day of spring training. March 1, Ted swung back Into action on May 16 (with eight hits. Including two homeruns. and seven runs batted in for nine times at bat in a doubleheader.

By now. Ted must face the fact that, at 36, it Is getting tougher all the time to get Into playing shape, and to stay that way. Merely putting on the uniform does not start those base hits rattling off the bat. It will be recalled that Ted ran Into two rather acute slumps late last season. He went 0 for 17 on one occasion and was benched fleetingly the other time.
