NEWS HEADLINE NEWS FROM AROUND FLORIDA Senate given Friday deadline for redistricting response (News Service of Florida) The Florida Supreme Court on Tuesday gave the state Senate until the end of the week to respond to a move by the House that would allow a circuit judge to consider proposed congressional redistricting plans from both legislative chambers and other parties in a long-running lawsuit. The Supreme Court requested that the Senate respond by noon Friday, according to an online docket. The House filed a document Monday asking that a Leon County circuit judge be able to consider the redistricting plans. The House made the move after a special legislative session collapsed last week without lawmakers agreeing on a redistricting plan. The special session was called after the Supreme Court last month found that current congressional districts violated the anti-gerrymandering standards.

Scott approval rating improves (News Service of Florida) Gov. Rick approval rating among Florida voters has climbed to 45 percent, a substantial improvement from earlier this summer, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday. The poll indicated that 45 percent of voters approve of the way Scott is handling his job, while 44 percent disapprove. In a June Quinnipiac poll, 39 percent of voters approved of the way Scott handled his job, while 49 percent disapproved. The new poll also indicates that voters have favorable views of U.S.

Sen. Bill Nelson, and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. Quinnipiac found that 45 percent of voters approve of the way Nelson is handling his job, while 30 percent disapprove.

Meanwhile, 57 percent of voters approve of job handling, while 31 percent disapprove. The Connecticut- based Quinnipiac, which frequently polls in Florida and other states, surveyed 1,093 Florida voters from Aug. 7 to Aug. 18. The poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

Man dies after crashing golf cart OCALA (AP) Authorities say a man died at a north Florida golf course after his cart tipped over during a downpour and landed on him. The Marion County Office reports that 81-year-old Jim Smith and a passenger were near the 10th hole at Oak Run golf course Monday when the accident occurred. The passenger, who had been playing with Smith, told deputies that it had just started to rain hard with lightning and thunder, and they were trying to get back to the clubhouse. With little visibility, Smith reportedly drove over the edge of a sand trap and got pinned beneath the cart. The Ocala Star-Banner reports that the other man went for help.

Fire rescue officials responded and pronounced Smith dead. Gov. Scott orders random hospital audits TALLAHASSEE (AP) Gov. Rick Scott is ordering state health officials to audit more than 100 hospitals as part of his ongoing battle with hospitals, which he says are driving up Medicaid costs. The state had asked hospitals and insurers to prove that their contracts charging rates higher than 120 percent of the Medicaid rate.

But Scott said roughly 130 hospitals comply and would be audited. The Republican governor also said in a statement Monday that all hospitals would be randomly audited. Scott is locked in intense negotiations with insurers that could undermine the fledgling Medicaid managed care program. Insurers want a raise, saying not making enough, but Scott want to put any more state dollars into the program. Lawmakers already gave hospitals $400 million this year to bump up Medicaid reimbursement rates.

The Florida Hospital Association says reviewing the letter. According to records, the list of hospitals to be audited includes: Bayfront Health Port Charlotte Bayfront Health Punta Gorda Fawcett Memorial Hospital Englewood Community Hospital Venice Regional Bayfront Health Doctors Hospital of Sarasota Elderly woman scammed ST. PETERSBURG (AP) Tampa Bay area police are searching for a man and woman who scammed an 84-year-old woman out of more than $10,000 in cash and $9,000 worth of jewelry. St. Petersburg police say the male suspect approached the elderly woman in a Walmart parking lot Friday claiming that he had found $300,000.

The female suspect then joined the conversation, and agreed to put up $50,000 in collateral so that a bank employee the man knew could help them keep the money. The elderly woman also agreed to put up collateral, returning home to get the money and jewelry. After handing the collateral over to the man, he told her he would be back in five minutes. He never returned, and the elderly woman was unable to locate the male or female suspect.
