The POWER of FAITH By WOODI ISHMAEL THE OTHER SIDE Missionaries Leave, Goodness Lives On Lew Anderson is a talented composer, musician and arranger. He has successfully worked in every area of popular and contemporary music. Since 1964, he has given his talents as director and arranger to a volunteer choral group in Larchmont, N.Y., known as the Musicommuters, a group of 65 dedicated people who love to sing, for good causes. Recently, at the suggestion of Anderson's minister, he composed the music and lyrics to what is called New Sound of the Testaments." It is in five parts: Genesis, God So Loved the World, Noah, The Twenty-Third Psalm, and Exodus. It is a stirring and inspiring experience of worship.

The chorus is accompanied by a combo of electric organ, guitar, bass and drums. The sound goes from Bach to rock and back. Anderson has not only inspired his chorus to new heights but also his audiences. His "A New Sound of the Testaments" has given a new and contemporary dimension to the scriptures and old and young alike come away from each performance with a revived faith. By DAVID POLING (The Rev. Mr. Poling is president of Christian Herald Association) The shakeup in the finances of the American church has had vibrations around the world. A sharp reduction in overseas personnel and a severe limitation (Hi new assignments have touched nearly every denomination that has a world missions budget. Although this trend started quietly three or four years ago, the crunch hit like a ton of bricks during the recession of 1970.

More than 100 Presbyterian teachers, evangelists and medical technicians returned last year alone. These cuts will continue and the perspective on overseas work faces a new question mark. About a year ago this writer received a communication from a college classmate who has served various church organizations in the Philippines. He spoke of the events we have described, but not in the tone of distress or defeat: is a definite period of transition for the church here. New leadership is taking over.

There is the urgency for participating in the national goals of economic and social development of the Philippines. The final links of dependence on the supporting denominations in the states are weakening. "The United Church of Christ, and other churches, too, have their eyes set more clearly on their own future as a people. They look to their own resources for leadership and to their local sources for support. When they need more money than can be found locally, they turn to various world or regional agencies for help, instead of depending only on American sources This situation has partly been a result of the dwindling finances in the United States for work overseas." The Christian community in the Far East, especially in Korea and Hong Kong, has shown unusual strength and vitality.

These folk are not holding their breath for the next check from the states nor do they feel that their program of Christian education and outreach is going to collapse with the departure of Americans. Yet a loud and long cheer should be offered for the work that has been demonstrated in the past. Yes, the missionary has deserved a lot of debunking and scorn; often he was a foo1 in a foreign culture and, too of ten, a racist looking for cheap help to do the dishes and wash the clothes. Movies and novels and first-hand reports have ably presented that side. But there is another side to this Christian service, and the Peace Corps among other programs, owes its spiritual quality to the vision and compassion of those first Americans who brought health and hope to millions.

In his book, "For Instance," Donald T. Kauffman quotes the leading secular magazine in dia, The Illustrated Weekly of India, and the surprising article entitled, "What India Owes Christianity." The Christian investment of lives and cash in this ancient land is staggering. "Christian endevaor has given India," says the author, "over 150 colleges, 2,177 high schools, 214 technical schools, 153 training schools, 620 hospitals, 670 dispensaries, 86 leprosy centers, 713 orphanages, 67 homes for the aged (are you still with 681 hostels and welfare centers, 275 creches, 44 agricultural settlements, 27 industrial centers, and several institutions for the blind, the deaf and the handicapped." A. Soares, who gathered the information, asked a fair question: "What other community has done as much for our country?" What happens when the missionaries leave? The work goes on and all the sponsors are local, lively and loving. (Newspaper Enterprise Assn.) Satellite From Ocean Site Lucey Plans To Sell His Real Estate Firm MADISON (AP) Patrick J. Lucey confirmed a report Wednesday that he will sell real estate business to a Wauwatosa firm. Although the sale is not yet final, Lucey said he would meet later today with representatives of the Wauwatosa Realty Co. "I felt that selling the firm would eliminate any possible conflict of interest." Lucey also said he could not devote his full time to the governorship if he had "a number of outside interests." The firm, which Lucey founded in 1954, undertook several housing developments in Madison in addition to buying and selling property. MINICLIER FORMOSA BAY, Kenya (AP) The first American satellite ever launched by scientists from another country went into earth orbit today, opening up millions of miles of uncharted space to X-ray research. A rocket named in Swahili launched by an Italian crew at 4::54 a.m.

CDT. Scientists said the Quito, Ecuador tracking station picked it up 66 minutes later, exactly on schedule, indicating the ship was in orbit. The rocket was named Uhuru because it was launched on the anniversary of independence from Britain. Gray clouds hung over the launch pad, a modified oil rig in the Indian Ocean off Kenya, as engineers from the University of Rome aerospace center checked out the four-stage rocket and eight American engineers checked out the 315-pound spacecraft. Die Italians launched the satellite by remote control from another platform 500 yards away.

Scientists said the spacecraft is expected to collect more data on X-ray sources in space during its first day of operations than has been collected in the eight years since X-ray astronomy began. American experts helped scientists from the Italian government and the University of Rome assemble the satellite and its 73-foot Scout rocket on an Italian-built launch platform in Formosa Bay, 18 miles north of the town of Malindi in Coast Province. The job of firing the satellite into orbit was left to the Italians. The operation is part of the San Marco project, a $17 million Italian program of space exploration. (AP) The American Lutheran (ALC) will ordain its first woman minister Dec. 20 at Community Lutheran Church in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. Barbara Andrews, 35, was her lay delegate to the October convention in San Antonio, where the decision to ordain women was made. Miss Andrews, who has been a member of the Edina parish for six years, graduated from the Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul in 1969.

She received a call to become assistant pastor of the Edina church Nov. 1. The Rev. Arvid Dixen, Community Lutheran minister, said there a single dissenting vote" cast by the 80 persons present at the November board meeting. The second American woman to be ordained as a Lutheran pastor, Miss Andrews has long been confined to a wheelchair by cerebral palsy.

Her first sermon as an ordained minister is tentatively set for Dec. 27. The Rev. Dixen said he has given Miss Andrews a "carte blanche to do whatever she wishes" as assistant pastor Miss Andrews said she expects to work with college-age adults in the small, 130-family suburban church. At its convention in Minneapolis last June, the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) approved the ordination of women, and followed with the ordination of Elizabeth Platz, 30, in College Park, Nov.
