TRI-CITY HERALD SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 1992 Columbia vital part of Tri-City life, say conference hosts Tri-Citians can learn why the Columbia River is a part of their lives by attending today's Great River of the West mini-conference at the Federal Building, local historical society representatives said Friday. "In the Tri-Cities, the Columbia River has been so important to its development," said Tom Moak, a member of the East Benton County Historical Society. Moak and Ken Larson, a board member of the Franklin County Historical Society, said today's program offers a historical perspective on the river ranging from its past, its development and the salmon issue. The two historical societies are playing host to the mini-conference, which begins at 9 a.m. with a panel on "How the New Deal Changed the Columbia River." Another panel beginning at 1:30 p.m.

is on "Salmon and the Grand Coulee Dam." The free program is sponsored by the Center for Columbia River History, a branch of the Washington State Historical Society. Today's panelists include Richard Lowitt, professor of history at the University of Oklahoma; Robert E. Ficken, a historian from Issaquah; Paul Pitzer, a history teacher at Aloha High School in Beaverton, and Keith Petersen, a historian from Pullman. Moderator is Gus Norwood, president of the Fort Vancouver Historical Society. Moak said the two 2-hour sessions are presented at a level useful to both adults and youngsters from middle school and up.

Question-and-answer sessions are scheduled. Motorcycle accident victim a Kamiakin grad A Kennewick man who died in a Thursday motorcycle accident has been identified as Jonathan D. Big yard sale fund-raisers hope to raise $20,000 for cancer center By WANDA BRIGGS Herald staff writer Sponsors are calling it the TriCities' la ver yard sale. The "Gigantic Faire Yard and Auction Sale," scheduled from 8 a.m. 8 p.m.

today in the P.I.E. Building No. 4 at the Port of Pasco, is the biggest fund-raising effort yet for the Tri-Cities Cancer Center. About $9,000 in new merchandise, donated by Tri-City firms, will be auctioned beginning at 3 p.m. The auctioneer is Scott Musser.

Items the yard sale have been collected since last fall and range from books to baskets from carpet to clothes and from furniture to fruit jars. The event, sponsored by Billie Lampson's special events committee of the Kennewick General Hospital Foundation, has raised $66,000 of the $1.1 million contributed or pledged to date for a cancer treatment center. The goal of the drive was $1.5 million. There will be entertainment and food available today at the sale, overseen by Gerald and Nancy Liner and Roger and Jan Ulmen. The entertainment includes a showing of the instructional firesafety EDITH house by the TriCounty Fire Association, a judo demonstration, hula dancers, and a demonstration on how to plant hanging flower baskets.

Also, the Pasco Police Department will put on a police dog demonstration. Other items for the yard sale include desks, king size bed, baby crib, sewing machine cabinet, stove, sinks and a pickup canopy. Items to be auctioned include a wood burning stove, a weekend retreat at a cabin near Lake Cle Elum, a security system, seaside fishing trip, tires and a threemonth family health club membership. Credit cards can be used for the items to be auctioned. The event is to be staffed by about 35 volunteers.

The goal is to raise $20,000. Admission is free. There will be door prizes. To find Building 4, follow the colored balloons leading through the Port of Pasco, according to Arlene Thompson, one of the event volunteers. Last spring, KGH proposed building a $4.3 million treatment center at Vista Field.

Our Lady of Lourdes Health Center in Pasco supports the plan, and negotiations are under way with Kadlec Medical Center to attempt to make it a joint venture. hether you choose the look of aluminum or the long lasting durability of wrought iron, we know you'll love Woodard.
