It settles the question to whether tbe Union still to continue a republic. This is not all that been accomplished by this momentous election. The negro question was taking a shape more dangerous than it had ever done before. The programme was distinctly' laid down to de- pnvo tbe country of four million laborers, a loss which no country will stand in the midst of prosperity.

IB furtherance of this scheme, other evils, equally disastrous would have lallen upon tbe country, since not only was the labor lost, but, according to Lincoln's tremendous emancipation and deportation scheme, a tax of unparalleled magnitude would have been 'laid upon the overburthened people. Such fodder don't go down with tba demo, cms ia this district, and oo Saturday, the 25th of October, tba democrats meet air Priaoeton aad noauaate a straight democrat for seaator WHAT TBBT BAD TO OVERCOME Some impression may be obtained of tbe immense power which the democracy bare met and overcome in tbe late elections by following statement of facts as to Iowa. The writer resides at the state capitol, and his letter was written to the Chicago Times: With tbe whole civil and military patronage and power of tbe state at tbeir and backed, in a measure, by tae jmttntittp aad power of the general government, there WM no corrupting influence, no species of bribery, no form or feature of threat and intimidation, which were not resorted to by tho unscrupulous partisans of administration to effect their purposes. They operated with a recklessneu and worked with a desperation unknown to their political history, or that of any other party ia this state.

Political prostitution never manifested itself to such an extent and ao ahamelesaly as at oar recent election. The work of bargain and sale went on openly. Wherever man calling him a democrat could be bought by money, or an office, or tbe promise of one, be was bought; wherever a man calling himself a democrat could be silenced or intimidated by threats, he has been silenced. Every influence, every appliance which the ingenuity of the leaders of tbe republican party could devise, and within their reach, have been resorted to to hoodwink and corrupt and overawe the people. Falsehoods without number have been circulated by tbe hireling pimps of a corrupt party, who, under pay as spies and informers, have traversed the country in all directions; arbitrary arrests have been made; and in fact all the corrupting influences, as well as the arbi trary power of the incipient military des potism with which we are being cursed, have heea resorted to to control the politi cal action of tbe people.

was- tbe main question, and we may look upon the election decisive. It has been of no less momentous importance in another respect, to wit In quelling tbe rebellion. Is could be set down as a self-evident proposition that the Onion could not bo restored upon the abolition platform. It was the height of insanity to believe that tbe South would ever submit to government which favored negro insurrections. Every impulse of resistance was called out.

It ooold not be expected that they would yield while tbey had a man or a dollar to a power which proposed to call up the horrors of St. Domingo in a population of eight millions of free white people. They would never submit, and no human man could wiah them to submit to such aa atrocity. The election deprived tbe rebels of this element, which would certainly insure unity and desperation among them. The tendency of the election is to show to tbe southern people that, while it is resolved to continue the war ontil the restoration of tbe Union, yet it is not tbe intention to subjugate tbe South, or to deprive them of rights enjoyed by their sister States; and it is the fear of this, we firmly b-lieve, which has prolonged contest.

Let the Southern States know that they "rill enjoy the protection guaranteed to them by the constitotion, and we believe they will willingly return to their alle They for fear tbey would be depnrH of their rights, and the south- ern politicians have persistently inculcated I the idea that tbey wou.d be robbod. We hope and believe the effect of election will go far to remove any snob impression In every way we regard it, the triumph Parker, Koeckert, Smith, Oeo. Schmidt, Taylor and Wolf.
