Volunteer Santas Being Reorganized Six men turned out for the initial meeting to reorganize the volunteer Santa program, through which many homes in the Logan area community are visited each Christmas Eve. Another meeting has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 12, in Immanuel United Methodist Church. The annual volunteer Santa program was originated about 25 years ago by Bob Steward, 924 Third with the help of James H. Stewart of 898 Walhonding Ave. At the very beginning, the two men made the Christmas Eve visits in their neighborhood where there were a number of elderly people and many youngsters.

The two left on the yearly trek about 6 p.m. each Christmas Eve and were out until about 11 p.m. Within 10 years, the project became too big to be handled by the two men and they appealed for other volunteer Santas. The response was very good, and the project was conducted every year until 1973 when health prohibited him from making Santa's rounds. This year Bob is feeling better and everything is for Christmas Eve when it is hoped there will beat least 12 men including Santas and drivers out in full force.

Santa's first stop will be at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, followed by visits to homes in Logan, Soui.i Logan, West Logan and Dicken Addition. Porch lights are to be turned on, inviting Santa to come in and visit with the youngsters. Each year a candy cane has been given to each child. Due to this exorbitant price of sugar and products that use sugar, the volunteer Santas will be contacting various organizations and the Logan Trade Club for help in buying the canes, which in the past has been provided by local merchants. unique here in Logan we have some of the nicest Christmas decorations in the country, and we do have Santas to go out on Christmas Eve, which many communities do not Bob Steward declared.

He especially remembers one Christmas when one of the visiting Santas stopped at a local home to see if any little youngsters lived there. The woman answering the door said, but we have someone here who surely would like to see Santa So Santa went in and visited with the elderly father, who was so touched that he actually cried when he saw Santa, commenting that it was the first time Santa almost cried, tool. Oh yes, Santa almost cried, too. Stewart said this is what it is all about provide Christmas spirit and at the same time gain personal satisfaction and Christmas spirit in return. Area men who would like to help Santa on Christmas Eve should come to the second reorganizational meeting Thursday.
