Family members say he was most proud of working with the Calabasas School staff, which WARREN THORNHILL Herbert studied piano, violin, voice and dance as a child and went on to dance in, and create, several companies in New York, San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Children adored her, and she seemed to speak their language, Fein said, remembering their laughter when one child who couldn't pronounce her name used to call her "Bossy." "And dance was always part of the education," she said.

"You couldn't be around Betsy and not dance. She liked any kind of dance that came from the inside out, just like education." Sara Wilbourne of Aptos, a dancer and company manager of Shakespeare Santa Cruz, danced with Herbert in the Company of Strangers, a performance art group founded by Bruce Lee. "1 felt like she had the most sense in some ways and also had such a big heart and so much experience." Wilbourne said. "I really trusted her intuitions, which were copious." Her husband said Herbert's central passion was the search for new ways of life, which led her to anthropology books, travel journals, fiction and poetry about complicated human relations. Herbert died shortly before school began, and Fein has been helping Herbert's apprentice, Maryam Shafaghi, who has assumed operation of the centre.

"I just get up every day and try to make sure everything goes right," Fein said. "It's a living testimony to Betsy. It is not possible to just let it go." Nick Herbert wrote of his wife's last words. They were, "Oh, no, I'm scared," followed by "Wonderful!" Services will be Oct. 20 at Camp Campbell, a space chosen to accommodate the expected crowd.
