"There's no doubt in my mind he'll be back, that he WILL hit again in the major leagues," Schueler said Wednesday. Jackson is rehabilitating after surgery to implant an artificial left hip.

He injured the hip playing football for the Los Angeles Raiders in 1990. "Knowing Bo, I'd be shocked if he didn't come back," Schueler said. "I know the rehab he's going through now, and I know the guy who's pushing him." Schueler wouldn't say who that is or where Jackson is working out. "We don't want eight camera crews rushing over there every- day. He's spent a quiet four months getting ready.

We all want it to remain that way," he said. Decathlete gets extra credit Reebok may not be happy with Dan O'Brien for failing to make the U.S. Olympic team. But another sponsor has given the decathlete special consideration. Visa-USA provides financial backing for the U.S.

Getting closer all the time The closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history actually was closer than the 43 thousandths of a second that was reported on race day May 24.

Al Unser Jr. beat Scott Goodyear more like .0331 of a second, according to U.S. Auto Club technical director Mike Devin. The discrepancy arose because of where the transponder boxes were placed in the cars. It was in the nose of Unser's car and in the sidepod beside the driver in Goodyear's.

"We don't score by the transponder," Devin said. "It is done optically." Devin told The Indianapolis News on Thursday the first car to get its nose across the finish line is not necessarily the winner. The winner, he said, is the first car to get its front wheels to the finish line. Speedway spokesman Bob Walters said the .043 will remain as the official difference. "It will be a part of 500 trivia," he said.

McEnroe's best trick against Forget was an escape from six set points in their tiebreaker after they resumed the match in the second set with McEnroe ahead 6-2, 5-5.

McEnroe used an old device, a sagged as if the air and spirit had been sucked out of him by that call. McEnroe bounced the ball a couple of times, served, then came in be- hind it to punch a backhand volley. The ball clipped the net cord, hung above it for one indecisive fraction of a second, then dribbled over on Forget's side for a winner. That was all it took to know that somehow, some way, McEnroe would pull out McEnroe claimed the ball was a foot long. Despite McEnroe's protests and pouting, the call stood, and he ambled back slowly to serve.

At that moment, he looked like a beaten man shoulders slumped, head down, shaking in disgust. His body WIMBLEDON, England (AP) The sorcerer and his apprentice, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi, will be matching magic in the most whimsical Wimbledon men's semifinal in decades. Who'd have thunk it? A 33-year-old has-been against a 21 -year-old never-was, each suddenly casting spells on their opponents and the crowd. By contrast, a predictable women's final was set up Thursday between No. 1 Monica Seles vs.

No. 2 Steffi Graf after a major brouhaha over Seles' grunting. The only oddity about the women's semis was the fuss over Seles' noise in her 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4 victory over Martina Navratilova. Graf beat Gabriela Sabatini 6-3, 6-3 with hardly a peep. McEnroe figured he'd need a miracle to win Wimbledon.

So far he's moving along mostly with his own sleight of hand and racket, aided by a little kindness from the net cord and a lot of help from the draw. McEnroe's wizardry carried him past Guy Forget 6-2, 7-6 (1 1-9), 6-3, shortly after Agassi conjured up a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Boris Becker in the completion of matches suspended by rain Wednesday. With Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic in the other men's semifinals Saturday, this marks the first time since 1951 that none of the top four men's seeds reached the semis. It's also" the first time in 10 years that three Americans are in the semis. McEnroe is the only semifinalist to have won a Wimbledon title, his third and last coming in 1984.

But his chance for a fourth could depend on how well he schooled Agassi in the mysteries of grass-court play. "There's probably a chance he wishes he hasn't been practicing with me quite as much as he has in these past couple of weeks," Agassi said. McEnroe laughed about the notion that he might have taught Agassi too well, but said he didn't regret it and wouldn't take Agassi's praises too seriously. Abbott PHILADELPHIA (AP) If Kyle Abbott pitched with the same stoic calm he maintains after each loss he might be 10-0 instead of 0-10. At least publically, he accepts the frustration of losing with a philosophy uncommon to many young athletes.

"I'm still trying to stay positive and not think about the record," Abbott said Wednesday night after losing 6-3 to the Montreal Expos. He's now two short of the worst start ever by a Philadelphia Phillies pitcher 0-12 in 1972 by Ken Reynolds. Maybe the 24-year-old Abbott goes home and takes out his frustrations. But in the clubhouse he stands fast, cooly parrying questions. Many pitchers would take a long shower trying to outlast the media.

Or they might get very angrv. Not Abbott. He stood his ground after his latest loss, blaming only himself. "When you make a bad pitch it's going to hurt you," he said calmly. "You've got to make pitches when you need to.

I didn't." Consistent losing isn't in Abbott's background. He was 26-23 in three minor-league seasons. In 1991 at Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League, he was 14-10, with a 3.99 ERA. He came up to the majors in September and was 1-2 in five starts for the California Angels. He was selected by PCL managers as the league's best pitching prospect, was lected as the left-handed pitcher for the All-Star game.

"It looks like the kid knows how to play defense, how to put the ball in play and he runs well," said Jewett. The camp was also another chance for Lambert, who was on Harris-burg's 1989 Class AA state championship team and played last season at Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee. Lambert, a right-hander, was clocked at 91 miles per hour. The signings of Hand and Lambert make a total of three players that have been signed out of the Logan camp in its two years. Former Cobden High School and John A. Logan College player Janseen Hand and former Harrisburg High School and Southeastern Illinois College pitcher Ryan Lambert have signed free-agent contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates within the last two weeks. Both players, All-South in high school, had one year of collegiate eligibility remaining.

Hand signed last Friday and reported to Welland (Ontario) in the Class A New York-Penn League Monday. Lambert reported June 21 to Class A Bradenton (Fla.) in the Florida State League. Hand played last season at Belle-vue (Neb.) College, an NAIA school. Logan coach Jerry Halstead expected Hand to be selected last year in the amateur draft. "He was stunned," Halstead said.
