incident marked the game between Birmingham and Notts County the referee stopping the game too soon and having to bring the players back to the field again Notts County's strong defence served them well up to the interval but Birmingham for whom Stoke and Kearns scored were always the better side Preston North End did very well to hold their own with Manchester City for their defence is temporarily weakened and in the course of the game Hunter was practically disabled by an accidental kick in the face and shortly before the close Bond the international forward met with an injury The occasion the ball waa rushed through after Draper had failed to clear and Goldie the half put on the last Although leading by 2 goals at half-time Fulham experienced considerable difficulty in winning Turnbull promising centre-forward shooting a splendid goal and the visitors more than onoe nearly equalising before Draper waa again beaten An injury prevented Hamilton from playing but the Scotch international has done nothing in tbs South to make his absence a source of weakness West Ham United accomplished a meritorious performance in beating Brentford by 3 to 1 for though goals by Allison and Staple? from corners gave them a commanding lead Gardner could not turn out in the second half owing to an injury to his heel but the visitors oould only score onoe from a penalty Notwithstanding alterations in their eleven Park Rangers found a weakened eleven from Portsmouth too good for them in a very hard close game From a penalty for a foul on Sugden soon gave the Rangers the lead but Dairy inple equalised before half-time and Elston and Smith placed the visitors in a winning pom tion before Sugden reduced the difference to an odd goal In winning at Reading the Brighton Albion enjoyed some luck the home team having the best of the play but shooting poorly and having one goal disallowed for a technical infringement Good play by Allsopp preceded the goal that carried victory with it Hall heading the ball past Whittaker The other visiting team to win New Brompton also had nothing to spare Watkins scored the only goal of the first half shortly before change of ends but soon afterwards Lee headed an equalising goal and Northampton did most of the pressing All their efforts proved unavailing however and near the finish a goal by CunHffe gave New Brompton the victory interesting encounter in tbe metropolitan diBtrxx on Saturday A close struggle oer-tadnly was witnessed but moot of those present must have been sadly disappointed not so much because Blaokhfath were beaten but than tbe play all round was of such poor quality Blackheath again adopted tbe Now Zealand formation or at least endeavoured to imitate it Tho result was not satisfactory and simply because tbe backs had only adim oonceptaonof tbeir various duties Apart from placing the boil in the scrummage the wing forward did Little more than look on the fivo-engh the got hopelessly muddled up with tho centres and the wing three-quarters were often to be found standing in front of oven tbe five-fMghths Naturally only confusion reigned behind the Blaekheath eerummage and until the players realise tbe nooesrity of keeping their proper places and purt more intelligence into their game tbe same state of things will continue One wonders by whaft process of reasoning a wing three-quarter arrive at the oonctuKosi that it is has business repeatedly to stand yards in front of the centre In such position he is worse than uselosa There is however no need for Bkackheath to be discouraged with Saturday's failure Theintncaciw of the New Zealand game are not to be learned readily but it i not difficult to grasp tbe maim points of tbe formation With one or two forwards Basil Hill among the number not faRy recovered from tbe effects of the oontest with the South Africans Blaokheath were not a strong in tbe pack as usual but tbe scrum magers held their own affui heeled well Mooeloy who quite deserved tbeir success but did not play a good game soored onoe in each haJf Cooper and Shaw each gaining a try and the latter converting one Towards the close Robinson the Blackheath harif growing tired of playing up to the tangle behind him raced away on his own obtaining a capita) try from which Robeon kicked a goal Thus a game which did neither side enrdit ended in ae win for Moeeleiy by 1 goal and 1 try to 1 goaJ The London Scottish opened their season at Richmond in brilliant style defeating Park by 5 goals and 3 tries to 1 goal Though perhaps not quite as heavy as the opposing pack the Scotch forwards were quicker and more skilful They nearly always had tbe ball in the scrummage heeled out smartly and dribbled very effectively their front ranks doing so well the Scotch backs had a fairly easy time and made good use of their opportunity Munro and Wade were happy in their work of opening up the game and WTalter and Purves the internationals made a strong left wing At all points the Scotsmen showed excellent football and on Saturday's form should have a most successful season Rooslyn Park began in an encouraging manner scoring after an admirable back movement commenced in their own twenty-five but afterwards they made little headway against the superior cleverness of their opponents Dixon played so well in the centre for them as to suggest that he is better suited in that position than at full back Richmond came to sad grief at Wandsworth-common the Harlequins beating them by 4 goals and 5 tries to 2 goals (1 dropped) The Richmond forwards did surly well but their backs as against the United Services the week before were outclassed A Stoop at half was in great form for the Harlequins and their three-quarters combined admirably Though be did not score himself Birkett gave a finished display in the centre having a hand in moot of the good work accomplished The Harlequins have a capital side and their match with the Soottish next Saturday beat form the Plumatead men detested Liverpool somewhat luckily Aston Vila MX down bet ore Sheffield Wednesday at Owlerton and Newcastle United after leading until within a few in mutes of the finish ot their game at had to admit a reverse As the Moil of ttus remarkable combination of ow-uie Arsenal for the firat time occupy the leading pontoon the oomprsmsoo being able tx alarm more points than exceptional skill for apart from their goalkeeper the Arsenal command the srrwre of no particularly prxmimvirt players The aide a indeed except for the mtroduotson of Kyle cenlar forward practically enjoyable experience for this season Angoll quickly equalised Harrison gave the home side the lead before the interval and following a keen struggle Glen (2) and Mouncher pat oa goads Another triumph figuring prominently in the Second Division that suffered defeat on Saturday dropped as a reault of this reverse from fint to fourth place in the competition On the other hand Leicester Fosse with a handsome rictory orer Wolverhampton Wanderers regained the leading position and Hull City and West Bromwich Albion coming next Hull City are now the only unbeaten aide whereas until Saturday Chelsea shared that distinction While the seventy of the defeat came as a surprise the reault of Chelsea's match with Notts Forest was not altogether unexpected Beginning the season in disastrous fashion the Forest steadily pulled themselves together and during the last forU night hare shown extremely good form They owed nothing to fortune on Saturday haring to take the field without some of their regular man The match was won in the first half the Forest scoring three times without once allowing their opponents to get through Judging by the way the game went appeared as though dashing tactics had been decided upon beforehand for the home forwards began at a rare pace conducting their attacks in brilliant faahion and the halves never allowed their opponents to settle down Tbe other games in the London district ended pretty much as was to be expected The Old Merchant Taylors who journeyed to Newport made quite a respectable fight against the famous Welsh club who only won by 1 goal and 2 tries to nothing but the Marlborough Nomads who were taking the field for tbe first time this season fared badly at Bedford being clearly short of practice Devonport Albion accomplished a capital performance by winning at Leicester by 1 goal and 1 try to nothing a result that augurs well for prospects against the South Africans Though without Gabe who was in charge of the Glamorgan fifteen at Cork Cardiff easily disposed of Neath and Swansea on their own ground gained a good win over Gloucester In this latter game Gnt the Gloucester and international half-back had the misfortune to break bis On successive Saturdays Woolwich Arsenal have Beaten Newcastle United runners-up for the Asao-naticn Cop last season drawn with Aston Villa when leaders i the current contest and defeated Liverpool id holders of ibe La ague Championship Such re-ufta speak for the aH round ability of the side and ia these matches the Arsenal's varied merits have had fob scope O' development In the first two of the gumes mentioned skill accompanied by plenty of peee marked the play with the Villa defence causing more trouble than had Ween experienced on the previe Saturday The last encounter differed in its main characteristics front those immediately pro ceding it and only robustness and dash together with the turn of the lack brought the Arsenal triumphantly through an arduous ordeal To what extent the abrence of RaiMieck tbe greatest of pre-rnt-daj centre halves and Dunlop weakened the Liverpool side one can only conjecture but the lax ness of once a Southern League helped immediately to the Arsenal's first goal Slight hesitation brought trouble and Saul had to resort to the last expedient in defence a kick towards his own goal Neave seized the opportunity on the instant an! da-inn" pact his opponent shot a very smart goal This point equalised matters and a few minutes later Neave placed lus side in front Kick-n- into goal from the touch-line the outside left jrob 'blr bad no idea of see -mg that was for a col league to do if possible As it happened the ball swerved in to Hardy who in trying to punch away aimed wile and Neave had the credit for what proved tb winning goal The Arsenal did their scoring in the second half the only goal previously having been shot by McPher on who beat Ashcroft with grand shot McPherson trbo came from the St Mirren Club was making first appearance for Liverpool and created a very Wivourable impression He played inside right to Hewitt with Parkinson in the centre changes necessitated by the inability of Goddard to take his place on the wing The visitors did so well that in view ot the small measure of success tnat attended them St CHIU ih? team seem to have improved and trotblv iUisbeck and Dunlop would have sav them from defeat hey played a hard strong game it bo it showing quite the quickness of getting to the hai: as did the Arsenal who once moie had then besr eleven Although not quit so pleasing to watch as its minutes of the start Hadley scored for the Forest and it was not long before Morris added a second point Without once relaxing their grip the whole team kept up a splendid pace and at length with a third goal obtained the result was to all intents and purposes safe The second half of the game saw a rather different state of affairs For a time Nott Forest maintained the upper hand but gradually the effort of the opening portion of the game began to tell Chelsea played better football but the Forest halves and backs rose to tbe occasion and though harassed at every turn managed to upset the combined work of tbe other side Near the close Hilsdon turned to account a centre by Kirwan but this was the solitary success that rewarded the effort of the Chelsea men Taken altogether it waa a good game and will no doubt teach the Chelsea men a valuable lesson If the defence can cultivate steadiness in the face of a fierce attack itiir forwards are quite capable of brilliant work Having overcome Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wolverhampton the previous week West Bromwich Albion appeared to have a fairly easy task against Clapton Orient despite the improved form the latter team have beesi showing of late As it happened the Albion were tn one of their happiest moods and won by no fewer than 5 goals to none They owed a lot to Shinton who soored four times The match at Glossop between tbe lock? team and Hull City produced some curious football At half-time Glosaop led by 2 goals to 1 but after ends had been changed Hull City got through three times and turned what appeared to he a likely defeat into a brilliant victory All the goals in the second half were kicked by Pearson who was ouly just recently transferred fiom Chelsea Leicester Fosse so far one of the smartest all-round team in the did not experience much difficulty against Wolverhampton Wanderers They played a fast game throughout tbear speedy forwards being altogether too much for the Wolverhampton defence POSITIONS AND POINTS Thirty pints of FRESH MILK make ONE POUND of NORTHERNERS GO UNDER South Ahricahs 22 Durham 4 In the fourth match of their toirr at West Hartlepool on Saturday the South Africans gained another capital victory defeating Durham by 4 goals (1 dropped) and 1 try to 1 dropped goal After thus easily disposing of presumably the strongest oounty aide in the North our visitors are not likely to meet with any serious resistance in that part of the country and it would seem that the international fifteen apart hopes now rest on Devon tbe oounty champions Though locally the South Africans did not create quite the same favourable impression as did the New Zealanders it is impossible to escape from the imple fact that they won even more handsomely in tbe matter of points at least than did their predecessors who overcame Durham by 2 goals and 2 tries to 1 try On that occasion the New Zealanders had their goal Hne crossed for the first time and curiously enough it has fallen to Durham to obtain the first score a dropped goal against our present visitors This feat was performed by the old international Taylor who happily was induced to turn out It i worthy of remark that the first score against the New Zealanders was also a dropped goal Lillicrap the Devon full back kicking it in the opening match Though they failed to hold their own the Durham fifteen made a creditable fight and poosibly would have run their opponents more closely but for an accident which robbed them of Neilaon one of their three-quarters the first few minutes Neilaon made a plucky effort to resume after the interval but quickly gave up so that for almost the whole of tbe game the county played a man short It was a Littie hard for the weaker side to be thus handicapped but mishaps of the kind are of course all in the luck of the game Even if the score was slightly affected in consequence the superiority of the South Africans was clearly demonstrated Though not productive of any particular brilliant play the game was an interesting one to watch mainly on the score of the determination exhibited by Loth sides The Durham forwards made a brave struggle against heavier and more powerful opponents and in wheeling following up and heeling out compared no means unfavourably with their opponents In the line-cut work of which the South Africans have made a study they sere outclassed The Durham scrummagers however stuck grimly to their heavy tak and to tEeir sustained efforts the comparative smallness of the score was mainly attributable for there were but few occasions when the Cclomals were nor pressing At centre three-quarter Taylor placed a masterly tactful game helping the side ouo of awkward positions by his clever kicking into touch and stout tackling The haJves Knagg3 and Sivewright were not quite a match for Caroltu and Mare but the former did much excellent work Ell wood was tolfrably good at full-back but was a little overshadowed by Marsburg who gave a sound and skilful airplay Tbe South African forwards who ave settling down into a strong pack did all that was expected of them exercising quite a controlling influence oer the game In their wheeling they ronietiraes went on without the ball and their passing was only moderate but otherwise little fault coi Id be found with their work They did not spare themselves in their following up and were full of vigour to tbj last Reid Raaff and Douglas fcorkcl were very promil ent both in the loose and the line-cut The play of tho halves and three-quarters was not as good as in the previous matches the passing and kicking not being marked by the best of judgment or accu acy A good many slips indeed were made and these were more noticeable after rain fell the men experiencing obvious difficulty in safely handling the slippery ball This fault possibly may disappear se they become accustomed to our wet grounds Stegmann was below the form he had shown in the earlier matches but both Loubscr and Krige played splendidly The last-named was making iiis fir3t appearance in this country and created a most favourable impression by his skill and adroitness in the centre The three-quarters did not have many chances owiDg mainly to the quickness of the Durham halves in checking attempts to open up the game but they made tolerably good use ot them YVith a little more precision in their passing the South Africans might easily have run up a heavier score even against the sturdy defence of the home team Durham started in a resohite manner and almost immediately came within an ace of scoring Neilaon being pulled down just in time by Marsburg It was in this collision that the Sunderland player received the injury that caused his retirement Directly afterwards tho ball was passed out to Taylor who cleverly dropped a goal Durham however were not long in possesion of their lead as the South Africans settling down to hard determined work soon gained the upper hand From some play near the line Reid ran behind Marc placing a goal and a few minutes later Raaff aiso scored Douglas Morkel kicking a fine goal Having now secured a lead of six points the Colonials took matters a little more quietly but continued to rather more than hold their own Durham were several times in tight place but managed to escape At this period the visitors did not make the beet use of their advantage in position their attack lacking variety and subtlety Eventually however Carolin seixed upon a favourable opportunity to drop a neat goal That happened about five minute6 before the interval when the Colonials led by 14 points to 4 No doubt now could be entertained as to the rwult but Durham started the second half in vigorous style For some little time the South Africans were subjected to strong pressure but their defence was admirable Marsburg being seen to special advantage Tbe Durham attack faded away and by some neat work Carolin and Mare carried the play to the Durham quarters where it remained practically for the rest of the game The home team successfully resisted several attempts to break through their defence but towards the close the attack prevailed In quick sucoeesion Loubser and Stegmann gained tries and from the latter Douglas Morkel placed a goal There was a capital attendance on the Victoria Ground the attendance being estimated at 10000 In their four games the South Africans have scored 17 goals and 9 tries (109 points) as against one dropped goal (4 points) They next meet Northumberland at Newcastle on Wednesday A REFEREE ATTACKED An incident of a regrettable nature occurred at Leicester on Saturday at the conclusion of the football match be! ween Leicester and Devonport Albion Mr Percy Coles the Hon Secretary of the Kugby Union refereed the match and one or two of his decisions evoked hostile demonstrations from the Leicester supporters who were nine tuousand strong As Mr Coles was leaving the ground an ugly rush was made for him and he was only saved from serious handling by the prompt action of the home club officials and the police As it was he received one blow in the face The police arrested a man against whom however only a charge of using bad language was made MATCHES PLASMON No other food contains so much nutriment in so small a compass Prepared under constant sanl tary supervision by scientific experts A few days trial will convince you of its undoubted merits FOR OLD AND YOUNG The afternoon's work did not produce anything like (hr same measure of success for visiting clubs as marked First League football in the middle of last month The balance of victory indeed went strongly faeoor of seams competing on thecr own grounds oatj three ades winning away from borne and six to admit defeat While however matters in this respect tbs aggregate of goals for tbe ten matches underwent only the slightest alteration last Saturday total of 29 goals following upon ttiree successive Saturdays of 50 goals apiece previous Id which the records for the first two Saturdays of the wemmm had ootne oat at 29 and 31 goals respectively Thus on sax oooascutivw Saturdays there has newer been a difference of more than two gosh the aggregate for ten contests Among other points in eonnection with Saturday matches may be noted that Notts County after playing five draws and gain ing oou victory had to admit their first defeat Bo Eton Wanderers also stood for some time in danger of bmmng thesr record taraebed but drew level rather luckily and snatched a victory in tbe last few minutes with the result that they can claim the appeared on this season's form lo have an easy task before them and despite the absence of Shepherd tbe International forward they were soon a goal to the good White getting through early in tbe game The Rovers however asttied down in capital form and Martin their centre forward snored twine before the interval On ream ing too the Blackburn men showed the bet tea- football but after MeEwan had mused a great chance of equxlnng Cameron succeeded in placing hia side on terms The point however was distinctly lucky Evans the Rovers' goalkeeper knocking the ball down but an claimed by the anderers and allowed by the referee over the line Less than five minutes remaend when from a free kick given against Cowell Clifford put the ball through and so gave Bolton a victory by 3 to 2 Stoke in meeting Manchester United enjoyed the services of Roose in goal ami not only kept tbeir opponents out for a long time but shortly before the interval scored through Rouse The first half however had not term-mated when Duckworth equalised and the same player putting on a second point Manchester United won a rather poor game Apart from Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United the only team to win sway from home were Sheffield United who in beating Sunderland at Roker Park effected the great surprse of the afternoon There was nothing in the Sheffield club's previous leoord to suggest them being capable of such an achievement but they worked together better than on any other occasion this season and thoroughly deserved their success Brown soon gave them the lead and although Bridgett got through for Sunderland Donnelly from a corner taken by Lipsham placed United ahead again In this match ag in three others there wan no scoring in the second half MITCHELL INMAN Although Mitchell programme on Saturday had a decisive issue but home clubs did not fare quite so well as tney have for the most part this season three teams losing on their owe grounds These results suggest that at length tome consistency may be expected Certainly the three clubs losing before their own supporters have given no evidence of possessing any ability A week before Queen's Park Rangers played poorly at Leyton so that a narrow reverse from Portsmouth could occasion no surprise Reading whe had lost five out of six matches suffered a further defeat by their visitors from Brighton and Northampton failed before New Brompton The Rangers steadily deteriorate and Northampton and Reading occupy the two last positions in the competition Luton oome among the teams that seem to have settled down to mediocrity and only Tottenham Hotspur Fulham aud Portsmouth can claim to possess more than average merit Norwich City lost for the first time on Saturday while Southampton ended a disastrous period by' scoring 5 to 1 against Millwall and gaining their initial success So the relative strength of the teams remains on the whole fairly even with a The injury to Neilson proved more serious than was at first supposed Neilnon having sustained a rupture of a kidney The doctor yesterday however spoke hopefully of the prospects of his recovery After the match Neilson was removed to private hospital and he was visited yesterday by some South Africans who expressed much concern st his accident Sheffield Wednesday on their own ground showed themselves vastly better side than they had been at Newcastle on the previous Saturday but they found their abilities severely tee ted bv Aston Villa and the firat half was nearly over when Wilson opened the sears This reverse roused the Villa to great efforts but before half-time Chapman had put on tecond point for Wednesday The tremendous pace of the firat portion of the game waa scarcely maintained afterwards but tbe football remained good Hampton reduced the balance against the Villa but the Birmingham team could not draw level and Davis entrusted with a penalty-kick should have placeid Wednesday further ahead New- HOCKEY RESULTS Goal
