They cover the history of title transfers on every parcel of land in the county The photostatic file contains a pho- tostatic copy of every deed and mortgage recorded (as required by law) in the county recorder's of flee during the past 30 years. Ever since men first took up land in Stephenson county It has been important to them to estab lish clear title to their holdings The first book of record in the circuit clerk and recorder's office at the county courthouse begins the "publick" registration of title deeds in the first half of the year 1837. Merger of Three Firms The private business of provld ing abstracts of title was starter in Preeport by three separate firms: Taylor and Frick; the County Abstract and Title company; and W. N. Conkrite, attorney, who later entered into a partnership with R.

A. Hunter in the abstracting firm of Conkrite and Hunter. In 1919 the three firms were merged in a single corporation, the Stephenson County Abstract company, and Mr. Hunter became the president. The merger set up a single company in the county en gaged In abstracting, and quipped it with its valuable set of books.

Business of Company Abstracts are sought by sellers of real property who have undertaken to prove clear title to the new purchaser. A satisfactory abstract of title for a piece of real estate shows all the owners who have held the property since it first passed from the public domain into private ownership. The abstract may reveal gaps in the legal record of ownership mlsdescriptions of boundaries as recorded in earlier transfers, or other discrepancies which indicate need for negotiation or suit to quiet title.
