They're putting up buildings with 13th floors in them.

Only ofTice buildings, to be sure. I have before me figures from a rental agent which disclose that from 90 to 95 per cent of all New York's post-war apartment structures don't have 13th the trend is otherwise in office buildings. Of 30 new skyscrapers Just thrown and there seem to be five new ones mushrooming to the blue every time you look five have no 13th floors. According to one builder, the difference is due to sex. Businessmen, he has found, don't care what number ia on the floor where they housewives, on the other hand, are Inclined to shudder at the prospect of living in a 13th-floor apartment.

The builder's acute observations are, of course, final proof of the melancholy fact that women's hearts and minds stiU are in the Dark Ages. The New York City Housing authority, as befits a brusquely official body, takes no cognizance of superstition and so includes a 13th floor in each of its The NYCHA has no trouble renting its floors, either. In one Madison avenue building, a company leased the "14th was no 13Ui in this and then insisted that it be renamed the 13th. For builders trying to break away from superstition, there sometimes are complications. One Park avenue building was thrown up WITH a 13th when the elevator cabs arrived, it was discovered there were no "13s" on the floor indicators.

So, the floors were renumbered. a a a a THE GOOD NEWS TODAY is that Julie Haydon.
