18 Tifo Lincoln August 6, 1971 lensir- Tie In American Classic Tourney HILL, HEARD SHARE FIRST ROUND ADVANTAGE AT AKRON Akron, Ohio Mike Hill curled in a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Thursday to shoot a four-under-par 67 and tie Jerry Heard for the first round lead in the $150,0000 American Golf Classic here. Hill hampered by putting problems in a winless year played brilliantly on Firestone South's greens, rolling in six putts for birdies to offset a trio of bogeys in near perfect weather over the layout. Beard, whose best 1971 finish was second at Memphis played steadier, sinking short birdie putts at Nos. 2, 16 and 17 in a bogey-less round. They were one shot ahead of Gay Bewer and Fred Marti, two more pros who have not won on the regular tour this season.

Marti did win the satellite Ontario, event during the winter, however. Five players were deadlocked at 69s. They were Terry Wilcox, Bob Lunn, John Miller, Dale Douglass and Bob Stone. Among six tied at par 70 were Arnold Palmer, bidding for an unprecedented fifth tour triumph this season. It was the first time in nine rounds, however, that millionaire from trooe, had not led the field.

Twenty-four players were within four shots of the coleader, including 11 at 71. Jack Nicklaus, 1971 PGA winner who paired with Palmer to win the National Team Championship last week, ran into trouble on the greens and was among 15 players in a logjam at 73. Hill, 32-year-old Jackson, brother of controversial Dave Hill, credited Brewer with helping his putting. said I was hitting it too quickly, that I was putting too much with my hands in practice rounds said Hill, whose best finish was a tie for 10th in the Tallahassee Open this year. Heard was surprised with his round that included on 31 putts, the same figure as his coleader.

played horrible in practice rounds here, really surprised with my said Heard, 24, of Visalia, Calif. as good as I can said Brewer after shooting a pair of birdies in a bogey less round. The 39- year-old Dallas pro has not won the 1967 Masters and has not led a tour tournament round this year. Marti, whose only 1971 victory was in the Ontario satellite event, said he missed the last two tour stops and went fishing instead. head was he said.

It was more mental than Marti, 30, who plays out of pounds since Christmas down Baytown, missed only three greens and ran in four birdie putts of 1 to 25 feet. Two of the greens he missed cost him bogeys at 6 and 9. Neither Brewer or Marti are enjoying big years in 1971. Marti is 59th on the money list with $27,171 and Brewer is 61st with $27,006.
