TEXAS AO 5-8341 (Next To Continental Inn) PRESTON FOREST 1 10, 5925 Forest Lane, Dallas, AO 9-0101 Cotton Insect Report By News In Plano County Agricultural Agent 57 Years Ago James K. Risinger, County Agricultural Agent, has issued a report on the cotton insect situation in Collin County. The report contains information supplied by Jeff Christie, Collin County BIG (Blackland Income Growth) entomologist. The report is printed below in full: FLEAHOPPERS-Most of the cotton in Collin County has reached the stage of growth where it will tolerate more fleahoppers. Younger cotton may need protection to insure proper fruiting.

Smaller dosages should be used at this time to help maintain populations of beneficial insects. BOLL WEEVIL Boll weevil infestations continue to be light in fields in which the overwintered weevil was controlled before he laid his eggs; while heavy infestations are found in fields in which eggs were laid. In several areas these heavy infestations may prove to be a problem in younger cotton which has not fully bloomed. BOLLWORM Only a scattering of bollworms and bollworm eggs have been found throughout the county. Any cotton sprayed this week be watched carefully for bollworms.

GRAIN SORGHUM The Grain Sorghum Tour is scheduled for Thursday, July 24, at the Wayne Scott Farm, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Grain sorghum varieties, previously resistant to head smut, are now susceptible to a new smut race, according to Dr. R.A. Frederiksen, Texas plant pathologist. First discovered by researchers about a year ago, the new race of Shpacelothecareil- iana, causative organism of head smut, has been identified in six Upper Coast and Coastal Bend counties of Texas where grain sorghum is a $15-million industry.

More important is the fact tha head smut occurs in all Notice Of Public Hearing The City Council of the City of Plano, will hold a Public Hearing in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building at 7:30 p.m., on August 11, 1969 on rezoning a 7 acre tract in the Alex Berry Survey located immediately south of Briarwood Addition No. 8, north of Meadowcrest Addition No. 2, and is bordered on the west by Jupiter Road from SF-3(M) to 2F-1. All parites, both for and against said zoning, are invited to attend and voice their opinion. Harry G.

Rowlinson Mayor parts of Texas, which realizes more than a $3O0-million annual income from the crop. rederiksen said. Though it would seem to be a gloomy story, the brighter side lies in the fact that Texas has already developed a new resistant variety experimentally. Darrell T. Rosenow, grain sorghum researcher for Texas at Lubbock, used a smut resistant female plant to come up with a hybrid very similar genotypically to previous resistant strains.

Tests conducted In a uniform head smut nursery at Beeville indicate there may be several good sources of resistance to the new threat, Frederiksen said. Reactions to the new smut race were determined this year on all commercially available lines and a majority of open-pollinated lines used for breeding. Certain sudan, hegari, broomcorn and feterita lines have shown much promise for incorporating new smut resistance, he added. The head smut nursery actually verified discovery of the new race when known resistant lines became smutty, Frederiksen noted. A uniform nursery will be continued to monitor genotypes of the new pathogen and to maintain a check for possible new races.

Tissue and genetic studies on the smut organism by graduate research assistants have helped speed up new resistance development, Frederiksen said. Bio-chemical and physiological aspects are now being examined by Archie Manis, graduate student from Killeen, Texas. from contributions to control of smut, research on this pathogen can lend much to the nature of plant resistance to disease, which is fundamentally said. Sorghum head smut has affected 20 to 30 percent of the plants in some fields, and in Those in the KNOW Advertise in the STAR-COURIER 995-6565 one case 50 percent, Frederiksen reported. Diseased plants have black masses of spores instead of grain in the head.

Described as a quasisystemlc pathogen, the head smut organism follows the growth point of the plant. Us spores do not need a host to survive; they can lay dormant in the soil. Since the first smut problem of economic importance in South Texas in the mld- Texas has been at the forefront of resistance developments for head smut. Chemicals or seed treatments will not give an alternate means of control so host resistance is the only answer, Frederiksen explained. lioni Elect International President or ADI-0773 W.

Members of the Jackot colony, poor whites descended from a renchman who settled at Lakeville, Massachusetts before the Revolution, are Indignant over the action of the state police in preventing the exchange of the wife of one of the leading Jackots for a horse. The Jackots would rather barter than eat. A patriarch had indulged his propensity of swapping until he had nothing left but his clothing and his wife. In exchange for a horse he gave his wife to his brother. The horse was worth five dollars.

Twelve hours later the patriarch swapped the horse for another horse. Finally, the police made the man take his wife back.
