No. 1 Jeffersonville completes 19-1 year By KURT FREUDENTHAL INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) Most of the season-long frontrunners, successful in their dress rehearsal outings, today were ready for the 67th annual Indiana high school basketball tourney. The great majority of the 401 hopefuls for 64 sectional titles at stake next week wound up regular season play Friday night. The only left was No. 3 East Chicago Washington at Lafayette tonight.

Top-ranked Jeffersonville led seven UPI board quintets, to victory Friday night. The other three were idle. Red Devils, No. 1 all season, finished 19-1 with a 70-50 conquest of Connersville behind Tommy 22 points. No.

2 South Bend Washington matched season record, rolling over Culiver Military, 90-71. The Panthers, with an 11-game winning streak, were paced by Eric 22 points. Muncie North, ranked fourth, exploded for a 90-48 rout of Kokomo; fifth-seeded Wayne of Fort Wayne dumped Homestead, 83-53; South Bend LaSalle, No. 6, rolled over Plymouth, 75-57; No. 9 Indianapolis Tech whipped city rival Manual, 94-81, and lOth-place Richmond edged Anderson Madison Heights, 52-51.

Ty Thompson, who totaled 11 points, hit a tipin at the gun to give Richmond the narrow win. Marion, state champ the past two years but not ranked among the top 20 in the state, finished a respectable 16-4 with a 60-56 victory over Fort Wayne Snider. Bloomington South, which wrecked bid for a perfect season less than two weeks ago, outlasted Franklin in overtime, 67-65, to claim its first South Central Conference crown. A loss would have meant sharing the title with Jeff. Bruce Kalb hit a one-hander from 16 feet with three seconds left for 15th consecutive victory.

The Panthers, rated 18th, led by six points with 90 seconds to play, then needed shot to clinch it. Elkhart Central, No. 12, eked out a 73-71 win over Warsaw. Rob three-point play with 2:48 left gave the Blazers the final lead. Roberson canned 24 points, Steve Reed 22 for Warsaw.

The only loser among the top 20 teams was Indianapolis Howe, surprised by city rival Wood, 57-55. In another thriller, Fort Wayne Northrop beat Elkhart Memorial, 43-41. Keith Edmonds canned an 18-footer with five seconds to go. Wes-Del apparently had the most prolific shooter in Greg Rhodes, whose 46 points, including 19 fielders, led to a 78-64 win over Lapel. Bob McDaniels had 36 in Eastern 72-61 win over Westfield.

Jack Nicklaus leads By LES KJOS LAUDERHILL, Fla. (UPI) The only person who seems to be worried about Jack confidence crisis is Jack Nicklaus himself. took a step in the right direction toward regaining my confidence Nicklaus said Friday after charging to a 66 and a four-shot lead going into third round of the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Golf Classic. it still where it should two-round total is 136, compared to 140 for Masters champion Raymond Floyd, Jerry McGee and Don Pooiey. Floyd had a 68 Thursday, McGee matched 66 and Pooiey carded a 69, his best round in 14 months on the tour.

know it sounds funny, but my game is nowhere near I want said Nicklaus, who is making only his third start of the year. all-time leading money winner also said he could not explain specifically why he plays the Inverrary course so well. Nicklaus won here last year when the event was held in conjunction with the Tournament Players Championship, and before that finished second, third, fourth and sixth. I play the course he said. enjoy the golf course.

Barr-Reeve (consolation) Castle vs. Loogootee MONDAY (No Activities Scheduled) 1:00 2:15 By JACK SAUNDERS UPI Sports Writer Imagine how many points Pete Maravich might have scored if he was healthy. Before the referees humanely put gun onto safety Friday night, the National Basketball leading scorer had made the New York Knicks the target of yet another embarrassing road experience, producing the biggest scoring outburst of the season. Maravich, averaging just under 30 points a game, poured in 68 points in the 124-107 triumph over the Knicks to set a league single-game record for a guard. It was the eighth-highest point total ever recorded for a game and made him only the third player in the NBA ever to score so high.

I feel very said Maravich. had a new shoe on my left foot and it very comfortable. But I had a rip in my old shoe and here talked me into wearing the new Magic Fingers is the nickname Maravich and his teammates have given trainer Don Sparks. wanted me to wear the new shoe so I sprain my said Maravich. I had had the old one on, I might have fouled out in the first Maravich also credited another man on the New Orleans bench, who had once done even better.

have to give credit to said Maravich, referring to Jazz Coach Elgin Baylor. Baylor once humiliated the Knicks on their home court with a 71-point showing; he and Wilt Cham- Mid-Year Clearance Salel JIM UEBELHOR T.V. A Service berlain, who seven times scored as many as 68 points, including his famous 100-point game, also against the Knicks, at Hershey, are the only players to score more than Maravich. rested me at the end of the first quarter and that gave me the momentum I needed late in the Maravich erased Jerry 63 points for the highest total for a guard. Bob 28 points led New York, which dropped its 24th road game in 31 tries.

Elsewhere in the NBA, Buffalo stopped Golden State 104-97, Detroit downed the New York Nets 112-106, Chicago beat Atlanta 96-87, Denver outscored Kansas City 130128, Los Angeles edged Philadelphia 104-102, Boston dumped Seattle 102-92 and Houston whipped Portland 123-106.
