through the Dardanelles Most of the other papers read in the section were technical in character In Section Chernies! Science there was large attendance to listen to Mr Norman Lockver's Note on the Elements in the which embodied the results of the most recent spectroscopic investigations and the reading of which was followed by a long discussion which Dr Gladstone Mr Dewar Mr Huggins Dr Siemens and others took part Mr Grantham CE chairman of the Committee on Sewage read the report of that committee to which some very important conclusions were appended (These conclusions were generally to the effect that all conservancy places including midden heap and cesspool system dry ash and dry earth closets pail paper by Signor Guido Cora on Sir Samuel Baker recent account of the connection of Lakes Tanganyika and Albert Nyanza was read by Mr Markham C-B An interesting communication was read from Lient Cameron RN the commander of the Livingstone East African Aid Expedition giving an account of the pro greas of the expedition and of its adventures in the interior Cameron and Dillon arrived at Zanzibar on the 13th January and immediately afterwards Cameron was laid up with severe fever being for some time a close prisoner on board her Majesty's ship Briton Dillon however lost no time in commencing the purchase of the necessary stores of beads cloth gun powder Ac and no difficulty was experienced in enlisting small body of recruits for the interior The principal anxiety of the expedition was that they should cross the swampy ground in the vicinity of the coast and lodge themselves on the highland plateau before the rainy season commenced hut owing to various causes this intention was Dot carried ont With the single exception of Dillon all of them had been seriously ill All however had left the coast by the end of April but they had even then been compelled to leave some portion their heavy stores behind them for want of carriage Cameron and Dillon hail gone on ahead had crossed the Makata or Swamp and had established themselves at Rehemeko where they were joined by Murphy who Teached them in the middle of May having buried hloffatt on the previous day and being himself so ill and weak that some further rest were necessary before the expedition could again push on Since then the health of the members of the expedition has been alto- Kther satisfactory they appear now to be in thought)- good working order and the only inconvenience from which thty seem is by far the largest vessel yet employed for that service being cajiable of carrying a cartro of fully 1200 tons She belongs to the British and African Steam Navigation Company and Bhe is in command of Captain Charles Hamilton who has been many years in the trade The crew speak of the Bonny as a lucky she having been five years running between England and the West Coast of Africa without the slightest accident or any excessive sickness although they regard an occasional attack of yellow fever as inevitable She left the Mersey on Thursday and will probably remain at Woolwich a week At present she is only taking in the stores which have accumulated since the departure of her predecessor the Ailela and about a hundred tons of provisions brought in a barge from Deptford but as soon as more goods arrive the hydraulic cranes will be set to work loadiug her simultaneously in all three of her holds The stores embarked yesterday consisted of 500 tons of rice a large quantity of salt pork and beef sugar and salt the latter being of two qualities fine for the table and coarse for pickling besides 2000 or 3000 more hatchets and billhooks for clearing the bush crates of camp-kettles and a set of iron ovens and baking-trays the dissected portions of which filled two trucks The surmise that the two battalions of infantry to be sent to the Gold Coast would be the 2nd of the 23rd F'usiliers and the 2nd of the Ritle Brigade proves correct and it is believed also that a third regiment the With now at the Cape of Good Hope will be employed upon the same duty The clothing-store at Pimlico is prepared to furnish suitable uniform clothing for these three regiments and as many more if requisite at a very short notice The non-commissioned officers who have gone in advance of the expedition have had sent after them to Liverpool their African outfit consisting of a light grey tweed tunic resembling a shooting jacket with belt trousers of the same material and rough canvas leggings the head being covered With a light helmet of the Indian pattern This costume has been selected after careful inquiry as the most suitable for the service and it is probable it will be the uniform of all the British troops employed in the expedition The native troops who prefer as a rule fighting nearly naked will for their better protection in the bush be clothed in frocks and trousers of grey duck or jean and they will be provided with belts and haversacks with wicker helmets for their heads The officers of the staff who have left have also provided themselves with a suitable costume according to pattern and each of them by common consent purchased a six-barrelled revolver and a short sword with one edge for cutting and the other for sawing showing that they were prepared both for rough work and encounters Sambo The market has been steady since Friday and the sales reported cousist of l2oo bags native Madras at 19 6d2'" 0 bng' ordinary Jaggery at 16s 6i and 350 tons
