Students' functions blocked by court MAGISTRATES yesterday called time on University of Hertfordshire students burning the midnight oil at three social events this month following police objections.

The court in Hertford blocked planned late-night finishes to a pre-exam celebration tonight and an endof-term dance on June 23 by refusing to extend licensing hours past 11 pm. And they cut the proposed extra drinking time for a sports day on June 19. Alan Stirling, licence holder at The Boathouse on Hertford's Balls Park university campus, had asked the bench to grant applications for 1 am extensions for the sports day and postexam dance and a 12.30 am extension for the function tonight. Sgt Jon France, of Hertford police, reminded magistrates that such applications should only be granted on special occasions. He argued that the three events did not fulfil that criterion.

Magistrates agreed and refused to extend licensing hours either for the function tonight or the June 23 bash. They agreed to an extra 30 minutes' drinking time for the sports day. Parent help group's plea for volunteers A GROUP committed to helping parents deal with their children is pleading for more volunteers. Parentline offers an anonymous listening service for mums and dads under stress. Calls to the number have risen by 20 per cent in the past 12 months and by more than 300 per cent in the past five years.

But the volunteer pool in Hertfordshire continues to shrink. A spokeswoman said: "The volunteers are trained to listen, to help callers sort through and unpack poblems, and to look at possible ways forward." Alcohol and drugrelated problems are becoming a worrying trend, according to details revealed at its annual meeting. The next course starts in September and there will be. an introductory evening on June 17. For further details, ring 0707 327541.

Family effort A SPONSORED bike ride by 30 cyclists, including 17 children, from Hertford to London and back on Sunday is expected to have raised more than £500 for the West Essex Family Mediation Service. 04 53R.
