AMONG OUR SCHOOLS By Our Regular Correspondents. Ltecoln School. Be asboned to die notil you bare done something for mankind--Horace Mann. Ralph Quick and W. Scott LeFevre were witnesges in the famous Williams and Fluck dog case Monday and Tuesday of this week, Winnie remained after his services as a witness, to visit friends in Morrison.

Toe Executive Committees of the two societies met Wednesday evening and voted to hold a contest sometime near the end of the term. The pupils will contest in declamation, vocal and instrumental muaic, essays and sight reading. This will certainly create co widerable excitement ou the part of tue members engaged in the enterprise, A contest of this nature, if properly conducted, 19 a good thing. The friends and classmates of Anna Carolus gave the little lady a surprise party at her home Thursday evening. All report a good time.

The finals of the year will soon begin, The first will be Wednesday, April 20. Room 2 hag added nine very Goe books to its library. This room 1 is DOW Wall supplied with good books, The pupila are very much interested in some of the books, The primary presente a beautiful appearance. Several very fine pictures have been hung, and with Its pretty paper curtains made by the little people, the room is quite this scenery is both instructive and attractive and is bigbly appreciated by its occupants. Myrtle Cramer left scbool and is enjoying her vacation at home.

We are sorry to lose Myrtle 1 from our midst. John Zbinden bas gone to Dixon to work. We wieb John success in bis all were sorry to hear of John leaving. Mr. Brewer visited all the rooms last Friday, To see the teachers standing around and conversing about their future.

Who will constitute the new board? Where, Oh Where am I at? Arbor Day will be properly celebrated next Friday by exercises, come. Sterllog School. Mr. Harry G. Wilson, representing "the American Book called at the ofice this week.

The preparation of the music for the commencement exercises -bas-beenplaced in the bands of Miss Richards. It will all be furnished by the pupils of the school. The county examination. for. pupils who have succeeefully passed the township central examination will be held in our high school room tomorrow, It will be conducted by Supt.

Chaplin, who will be assisted by Miss Parmelee. Miss Witter, of Albany, visited Room 6 this week. Sbe is a teacher at that place, There are now forty-seven pupils in Room 11, while there are only forty-six 508tB. The writing done by the pupils of late has been of more than usual cellence. The business writing done by the pupils in the higher rooms is bard to be equalled.

The physiology class of Room 6 has been studying the brain, perves and spine. Through the kindness of Theodore Carter the class secured a skeleton of 6. beef, which has been given a thorough, interesting and practical study. A. second contest in declamation will b9 given by the A.

P. Society on Friday, April 22. The following per8008 will be the contestants: Ida Philips, Nora Lust, Frank Hermann, Arthur Brimmer, Ermyn Smith, Lena Overbolser, Mattie Daveler, Nellie Jobnson, Eddie Randall and Amy Col. quiet. The prizes will be presented by Carrie Reitzel.

C. HENDRICKS' CANDIDACY. He 1. Urged By Friends to Run for Connty Superintendent. B.

F. Hendricke comes ont 88 8 C8Ddidate for the position of County Superintendent of Schools because he was urged by his many friends to do 80. This is no reflection on the capability of any of the other candidates for the place, but Mr. Hendricks took it to mean that the people wanted him. He has been a success 88 8 teacher and a success as County Superintendent and his work in Savanna while he was absent from our county has MAtured his plans and convictions in gard to educational work.

During the time be was Superintendent of the Savanna echoole he was alwage active in institute work and in all educational work. These years of endeavor in these lines should make bim more of an educational force than ever and make him better equipped man for the place he seeks. When he left Savanna the people gave him an ovation. The Savanna Daily Times said of him and his work: Our departing superintendent bag been honored on the eve of his leave taking at various times. The pupils of our schoole, the High School Alumni, the Woodmen Camp, had all in a small measure demonstrated their regret that he is to separate bimself from us, "These manifestations bave but been all told these of in these columns before, displaye of sincere regret, although from the bearte of those who have been more intimately agsociated with Mr.

DEATH OF WENZEL BARTEL. Ho Passed Away at His Home Satudny Evening. Wenzel Bartel, highly respected citizen of Sterling, died at bie home on First avenue Saturday evening, after a long illness of' stomach trouble. He was taken ill last Thanksgiving and has not been well since that time, but it was lees than a week ago 'that he was compelled to go to bed. The funeral services were held at the Church of the Sacred Heart Tuesday morning at vo'clock, the Father Fegers ofliciating, The Catholic Knights hts of America, of which the deceased was a member, will attend the services fu a body.

Mr. is the first ber of that order to 'die in this city. 'The deceased was born. in Austria sixty-three years ago. He came to thie country and settled in Montmorency, Whiteside county, thirty-three years ago.

Ile spent his time in farming and finally, about three years ago, came to this city, retiring from active work. Besides his wife, be leaves to mourn his death nine children, six 8008 and three daughters. They are: Charles, of New Orleans; Josepb, of Sterling; Andrew, of Montmorency, Louis, of Sterling; John of Sterling; Mrs. George Brown, of Sterling, and Lizzle and Rosa, both of whom are at home. The deceased was highly thought of by all who him.

He was good and kind, honest in all of his dealings, and generous in all his impluses. lie was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent fatber and a true and warm friend. Hie death is sincerly mourned by all, and the many friends of the members of the family extend to them' in this their bour of affliction their heartfelt sympathy. FOR SUFFERING CUBA. The Princeton Republican says the banks of the Hennepin canal must bare some protection againat floods and the alughing away of tha loose soil. Some of the best engineers thought the original estimates and plans of the gineers were all right and did not appear to have much faith In the stories about the loose soil.

Major Marshall, of Chicago, however, has taken a different view of the situation, and bas sent in a report on the subject. In this he says the embaukmenta in many localIties must be riprapped with stone to preserve them and estimates thin cost at $2,000,000, which amount must be added to the original estimates for the canal. The amount will undoubtedly be appropriated by Congress and when this is completed the canal ments will present a much more stantial surface than at present. Proceedings are now being taken in the United states Dietrict Court for the condemnation of the entire right of way for the feeder, a distance of twenty nine miles, and running from Sterling to: a point a few west of Wyanet, and for fifteen miles of right of way on the main line. For carrying On the work there is now available $500,000, and the sundry Civil bill now pending in Congress will appropriate 81,400,000 additional.

The work will now proceed rapidly. Major Mareball RaJa, and will be completed on, the original plans until the extra amount is appropriated, when the work on the protection of the embankments will be commenced. Nearly all of, the extra 82,000,000 will be expended in Bureau county, WOMAN IN THE CASE. Henry CAMBODR is Supposed to be In Denver, Colorado, Henry Caesens, who left this city some time ago, is now supposed to be la Denver, Colo, For the past week his name has been on the lips of his many acquaintances bere, and 8 great deal of supposition has been indulged in as to his whereabouts. There seemed to be no reason why be should skip out, and his friends were loath to believe he had done so.

married to Otto dricka, and. was. soon after divorced from bim. she again staid at the Cassens bome for 8 short time. Mrs.

says that during her last stay there Mr. Cassens was not 80 kind to her as he-had-been-theretofore. When he left home be gave his wife about $65 in cash, and between $300 and $400 in notes. It de supposed that he took with him about $1500. He owes no debts here.

Chief of P'olice Fitzgerald has been notified of the matter and baa talegraphed to Denver to trace him if possible. R. K. Swift Wednesday concluded the purchase of what is known 88 the Adam Spies lota, formerly occupied by the Adam 9plea wagon factory and this morning work was commenced on. 8 building 110 feet deep, with fifty foot front, and two stories bigh. The building will be of brick.

In an interview this morning Mr. Swift stated that the rapidly increasing business of the Empire Manufacturing Company necessitated its either renting larger quarters or putting up 8 new building, consequently it decided upon the latter alternative. In the past the company has been getting part of its work done elsewhere, but 86 8000 as the new building is completed, a much larger force of men will be put' to work, and all parts of the machinery manufactured here.
