long line of managers to be fired by New York owner George Stein-brenner Monday took exception with charges made by his boss must refute certain allegations that have been said Michael fired Sunday and replaced by Bob Lemon who managed the Yankees during parts of the 1978 and 1979 seasons people check closely sure that I never complained about front office interference and I never failed to cooperate with the front office with two exceptions when the dugout was called (on two occasions) during games by Yankee personnel other than the Steinbrenner had accused Michael whose team won the first-half championship in the American League East of being with other' members of the Yankee management and said Michael had hung up the phone on a Yankee executive a key factor which led to his dismissal Most observers felt Michael was fired for his public statement in as well as Nebraska is looking forward to playing in those Mg games this said Kelly Phelps who inherited the starting quarterback spot from JC Watts in 1961 games can help us in the One of the major concerns tor Switzer is at quarterback where Phelps holds a slim edge over Darrell Shepard at this point Phelps backed up Watts two years ago rushing for 358 yards and five touchdowns but was red-shlrted in 1980 Shepard ran toe second team in his absence last season and had 300 yards and four scores toshowforit the past always been a big difference between our No 1 and our No 2 guy" said Switzer both Kelly and rell are good players They're both very average passers but can live with that They both have good hands and good mechanics has great speed (45 in the 40) and that gives him' a bit of an edge short (5-foot-10) a squatty-type back similar to Steve Davis We have a quarterback in Kelly there's just not as much of gap between the top two as in years past" Phelps will be surrounded by have vowed to make Ainge live up to his contractual commitments with the club Ainge in the second year of a that there would be no problem fm him to leave baseball Also in his affadavit Ainge said he was unaware of any clause which prevented him from playing basketball When he signed his contract with Toronto in September 1980 he did so without the advice of a lawyer The Major League Baseball Players Association has also filed a grievance for Ainge claiming language forbidding him from talking to Eight arch-rival Nebraska for their Homecoming Not Kansas State nor Colorado nor Kansas Not any of the perennial doormats Nebraska "I'm cautiously optimistic about our football said Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer college winning est active coach (883) with an 83-9-2 record team is better than some and not as good as others I've had in the past think it has a chance to become a good football team but we're very young If good this year we ought to be damn good next year because all bock" The Sooners are good enough to start this season ranked No 3 in the UPI poll and have a schedule conducive to delivering Oklahoma its fourth national championship The Sooners can improve their own standing and end the national aspirations of three perennial Top 10 teams this fall with games against
