A4 The Columbian Wednesday March 14 1990 1 LOCALNORTHWEST Glasnost on the home front: Russian refugees now family America Vova sat up straight 4 Ai and smiled when he said that It was his answer whenever we asked him what he liked about America Vova 23 and his wife Galya 19 had dreamed of democracy and freedom for years But reality for them was living in the Soviet Union putting up with food shortages high prices and discrimination for living their Christian faith That all dunged when they arrived in the United States Jan 16 as refugees Two days earlier my wife Mary and our three children ages 10 8 and 6 had agreed to sponsor a young Russian refugee couple Mary and I had been to the Soviet Union as college students 15 yean ago so we had a taste of what life was like there and we knew the genuine warmth of Soviet people Some of our relatives thought we were crazy for taking on the responsibility of housing refugees Our friends shook their heads and wondered how we could do it But as it turned out Vova and Galya fit into our household so well that we soon considered them part of our family They speak hardly any English and we speak even less Russian We communicate with body language by looking up words in a Russian-English dictionary and drawing pictures As come to know one another better we also are managing to understand one another more Gradually they have shared glimpses of what their lives were like in the Soviet Union Vova the youngest of 11 children (only one sister remains in the Soviet Union) told us that when he was a child he was kicked out of school several times because he about a wages Vova and his brothers all free-lance photographers wanted a good camera so badly when they were in the Soviet Union that they paid an American tourist 2000 rubles for a Canon AE-1 It has also been a blast introducing our refugees to American appliances and gadgetry We had to explain that dirty dishes go into the big white thing next to the kitchen nh Galya still peers into the microwave as she tries to figure out what makes it cook food One Friday night when I used the air popper to make popcorn die and Vova ran over and stood next to me smiling at every pop After Vova cashed a check at the bank the other day he acted surprised and said problem" when we got into the car In a combination of Russian and English he managed to make the point to me that banks in the Soviet Union always have enough money when you want to cash a check Vova and Galya bought their very first phone the other day Then they bought a flowered shower curtain that I think somehow reminds Galya of her mother and father's home in the Ukraine They were simple purchases but for Galya and Vova they represented the beginning of independence a chance to make it on their own They moved out of our house the other day and into a small apartment a few blocks away so happy almost giddy Their next big step will be finding jobs As for us we have two empty chairs where Vova and Galya used to sit at our kitchen table Part of our family is gone Fountain play With tht cool splash of spraying water behind Park in Wentachee Recently warm weather her Hortenzia Garibay 7 of Wentachee skips made the fountain a cool spot to enjoy the around the Fountain in Memorial sunny days Blast damages Tacoma garage Police: Discovery of skeleton But Sgt Jim Smith a police department 15 cars parked in the Budget Car Truck Rental facility Garza said The parking garage is located north of the Greyhound terminal Hie room affected by the blast was at least 25 feet away from the nearest portion of the Greyhound terminal which is the restaurant Garza said The explosion blew out the door of the room Garza said Thompson estimated damage to cars at between 10000 and $20000 He said some of the damaged cars belonged to private citizens who lease parking space from Budget Budget employee was working down Thompson said said it sounded like a rumble like a large explosion then there was a whoosh of air The explosion kind of went up the wall from a junction box then across the ceiling and straight down on a bunch of cars parked there leaning more and more to something accidental but just a Thompson added we get tests back I say for Said Garza 'To me it was coincidental that there is a strike and this NOTEBOOK By BOB 8ISSON Tim Columbian was a Christian His family was fined few going to a church service In the Soviet army he was jailed for a month because of his faith We read about increased religious freedom in the Soviet Union and that is the case in major metropolitan areas there said Sue Longaker of a Portland agency called SOAR Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees in smaller communities where most people have come she said changed much" In the last two months had plenty of fun introducing Vova and Galya to American life One of my favorite outings is taking them to the supermarket where they are awed by the well-stocked shelves and the huge choices of products On our first trip there Vova stood in the aisle between the candy bars and the ice cream looked around then waved his arm and said Union It hard to figure out what he meant At Vancouver Mall he and Galya were amazed at the available merchandise In the Soviet Union Galya said a decent pair of boots cost 200 rubles which is said city police homicide Sgt Joe Ritter wish he would have at least left something to tell us why he did Owens disappeared Sept 7 the day after police questioned him about the disappearance of his 78-year-old wife Gladys County Police Maj Jackson
