Twins Win Without Versalles 6-3 ST. PAUL MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Twins are winning this season without Zoilo Versalles the classy: shortstop who Manager Sam Mele said was irreplaceable when Minnesota won the American League pennant in 1965. The Twins won the championship last year despite injuries which kept slugger Harmon Killebrew and pitcher Camilo Pascual out of action for several weeks. If Versalles had been hurt, Mele said, the Twins would have floundered without their defensive whiz, who batted .273 and won the Most Valuable Player award. Versalles played in all but two of the Twins games last season.

But he has been out of Gale-Ettrick Posts 4-2 Win In Coulee Loop action since Saturday with a shoulder injury, and is not expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Twins meet California to open a 6 game home stand. The Twins have won three of four games since then, including a 6-3 verdict over the Kansas City Athletics Tuesday night. Speedy Cesar Tovar, replacement, cracked two singles and a double to lead the 12-hit Minnesota attack. Tovar, a rookie who failed to make the grade in a brief trial with the Twins last spring, has collected 10 hits in 18 tries since replacing Versalles. But it was an old pro, catcher Earl Battey, who delivered the clutch hit that broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and gave Dave Boswell his third straight pitching victory.

double off ace Kansas City relief pitcher Jake Aker, scored Jimmie Hall, who had walked. Battey also singled home one of two insurance runs in the ninth. Hall singled in the other run. Walks to Don Mincher and Harmon Killebrew with the bases filled in the second staked Boswell to a 2-0 lead. But Ernie Fazio tripled home a run in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly- Doubles by Bernie Allen and Tovar gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead in the fourth.

Catcher Phil Roof hit his second home run of the season in the fifth for a 3-3 tie. Boswell, now 3-4, struck out 11 batters and walked only one. But three of the five hits he allowed were for extra bases. In addition to Battey, Hall and Allen also had two hits for Minnesota. The victory moved the Twins over the .500 mark for the first time since May 25.

They are in fourth place, games behind league leading Baltimore and only one-half game ahead of fifth-place California. The Twins had a 5-1 record on the short road trip against Chicago and Kansas City. The Angels have a 4-1 edge over the Twins in play thus far. Mele has tabbed two southpaws, Jim Kaat, 7-4, and Jim Merritt, 0-2, to start for the Twins tonight in the twi-night doubleheader. Probable starters for the Angels are Jim McGlothlin, 3-1, and Clyde Wright, making his major league debut.
