Manufacturing Cor will be chairman of the Johnson County commissioners for the next two years Carl hi Standiford first district commissioner succeeded Herman Higgins second district commissioner as chairman after board reorganization Standiford who lives at 5416 Mohawk has been a member of the board since late 1958 and has sprinkled commission sessions with firm opinions and colorful terminology like his recent expression about a banshee He succeeded the late Martin Zeigler in the first district after Zeigler's resignation in December 1958 Standiford became an employe of the Crawford firm after leaving college and worked up through the a to the managerial position He is a native of Glenwood la attended Glenwood high school and Iowa State College now Iowa State University Ames Standiford was nominated for the job by Higgins who has been chairman for two Harry King Jr third district commissioner seconded nomination One of the first official acts of the new chairman was in injured in a head-on collision Friday evening on 1-35 three miles north of Olathe According to a witness one of the cars was in the wrong lane moving north in the southbound lane Killed in the accident were Mr and Mrs Nathaniel Reynolds 8628 Kessler The couple was pronounced dead at the scene Reynolds was 74 years his wife 70 Injured was Carl Thompkins 25 of 802 Pine Thompkins a Negro was taken to -the Olathe Community hospitaL He suffered a head injury He was reported in critical condition He was transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center late Monday night The witness Patrick Farmer a 22-year-old sailor stationed at NATTU said he saw the Reynolds vehicle turn right at the 118th SL underpass and proceed north on the southbound lane He said he followed the car from the northbound lane and began waving to the driver He said Reynolds 'Waved back but apparently did not realize he was in the wrong lane Farmer said he then saw the Thompkins car passing a truck and heading toward the Reynolds car The impact tore the engine loose from both cars and sent the steering wheels through the windshields Farmer stopped to render aid while another witness went to summon an ambulance and the police Sgt Fred Allenbrand of the Johnson County sheriffs office estimated that the Reynolds car was traveling from 50 to 60 miles per hour at impact No estimate could immediately be made of the other car's speed No skids marks could be found at the scene and the cars apparently hit at full impact Both cars were demolished The wreckage had traffic tied up for nearly an hour on busy I-35 Mr and Mrs Reynolds had left Olathe minutes before the accident where they were visiting their granddaughter Mrs James Harold Puckett who lives on Keeler St The Reynolds had raised Mrs Puckett since she was two years old were making their first visit with her since her marriage three months ago A Pomeranian dog riding in the front seat with the couple escaped injury The dog was pulled out of the tangled wreckage by highway patrolman Terry Cupps who gave it to Allenbrand for safekeeping Allenbrand who has a Pomeranian of his own said he would contact the couples daughter Mrs A Martin 9205 Elmhurst today to determine what should be done with the dog Held for Bogus Check Lee Shannon 58 of route 1 Olathe was arrested Friday evening on a warrant charging him with passing a $100 bogus check drawn on Patrons bank He was confined in the county jail and held under $500 bond Councilman Blocks Engineers Pay Hike (Picture on Page 3) An Olathe man John Anderson Jr was inaugurated as -governor of Kansas Monday the third from this community to hold the highest office The swearing-in ceremony was held at Municipal Auditorium in Topeka Anderson born on a farm near Olathe defeated Gov George Docking in the general election last November Prior to his election Olathe had supplied two other governors John SL John and George Hodges proceedings were broadcast over the largest radio network ever to carry the inauguration of a Kansas governor It was telecast live in the Topeka area and filmed for stations in other sections of the state A painting of the statehouse dome formed a backdrop for Anderson other officials and important guests who were seated on the auditorium stage The arena was filled nearly to capacity It was decorated with bunting and festooned with balloons The new governor was dressed in a dark business suit He placed his hand on his bible as he took the oath of office City Commissioner Robert Huggins blocked raises for the city engineer's department during meeting of the governing body Huggins said the engineers are supposed to be working Saturdays but insist on taking the day off "Any employee who is not supposed to be available for emergency calls is supposed to work 44 Huggins said "This was agreed some time ago in another city commission "Yet the engineers either show up or stay around very long on Huggins said All city employee raises for 1961 were tabled pending an "outside Out-going Gov George Docking received a long of applause when he was introduced Following the inaugural ceremonies he stepped up to his successor and shook hands After the ceremonies at the auditorium the official party returned to the statehouse where a 19-gun salute greeted the new chief executive Many Johnson Countians attended the inaugural and the govern reception and ball later in the day The Olathe high school band provided music for the reception Mr and Mrs John Anderson the parents were among the relatives who attended At breakfast the family enjoyed an "apricot cake baked by Mrs' Lawrence Blake of Olathe whose recipe for that delicacy won her the National Grange baking contest Watching the inauguration were the
