With the ban on the EIU one yard line early in the third quarter Miles fumbled and Jor-gensen recovered.

Later in the third quarter Jorgensen intercepted a Miles pass on the Eastern 47. Eastern is in second place in the IIAC with 1-1-1 mark while Western Illinois (1-3) and Illinois State (0-M) bring up the rear. The Panthers are now 1-5-1 for the season and close their schedule next Saturday at Eastern Michigan University. Trailing 16-10 in the fourth quarter, the Panthers were still within a touchdown of pulling the game out.

However, Central's Don Krueger, a defensive halfback, ended the Panthers' hopes of turning the tide by recovering an Eastern fumble on the EIU 34-yard line. Eight plays later the Chips scored on a seven-yard pass play going from quarterback Bob Miles to Greg Hoefler. Bruce Cameron added the extra point on a kick. Hoefler became a thorn in Eastern's side as the game neared it's end, catching three passes for 111 yards and two TD's, both in the last quarter. Once again they are faced with a key game and it's against the Gophers of Minnesota Saturday. AH the Boilermakers need to go west over me New Year weekend is a triumph over Minnesota Saturday at Minneapolis. Down through the years every Big Ten team except Purdue and Indiana have made it to the Rose Bowl. Purdue has' threatened often but never accomplished the dream.

Now the matter is in the laps of the Boilermakers. They can clinch the bowl bid with a victory over Minnesota, a team they defeated 35-0 last year. A loss to Minnesota will not completely eliminate Purdue from the running but it would bring Illinois in the picture and give Minnesota the inside track. Purdue maintained its Rose Bowl advantage with a 23-0 victory over Wisconsin Saturday and Minnesota remained in the running with a 28-13 triumph over Northwestern. Illinois, the only other team with a chance of getting the bowl bid, upset Michigan 28-21 to give coach Pete Elliott his first triumph over brother Bump Elliott.

Illinois' chances, however, hinge on a Minnesota victory over Purdue and the defeat of bom contenders the last week of the season while Illinois defeats both Wisconsin and Northwestern. Meanwhile, Michigan State, the nation's No. 2 team, clinched a tie for its second straight Big Ten crown with a 56-7 victory over Iowa. Michigan State faces Indiana Saturday and after that the Spartans get a shot at the national championship when they meet Notre Dame at East Lansing, Nov. 19.

As the game opened, however, the Panthers looked like giant killers.

And it was the smallest Panther, Tim Mash, who stands 5-7 and weighs 155 pounds, who did the biggest job. He took a CMU punt on Central's 46 and returned it 21 yards to pave the way for the game's first touchdown. Dennis Bundy, Lester Giese, John Cappello and Joe Davis each carried the ball once to put it on Central's two-yard line. Bundy took it to the one and then carried it over the goal line for the TD. Ed Wold kicked the extra point to put EIU ahead 7-0.

The Chips came back in the second quarter with a drive that covered 80 yards. Bob Rosso and Bob Foldesi took turns slicing through the Eastern line with Rosso going over from the seven. Asked how he handles a kick-off return, Brown said: "A back always starts up the middle and it's up to him to decide which way to go. "On the first one yetserday, I was surprised to see only two men on my left, so I thought I'd rather fake right and then go back out.

The guys did a helluva job blocking. "The second time I went right up the middle then veared to my left. The first time I was tired, the second, I could have gone another hundred." Brown became the first player in NFL history to score twice in a game on kickoff runbacks as the Eagles avenged a 56-7 early-season loss to Dallas in one of three big upsets on Sunday's schedule. Dennis scored a goal and assisted on two others as Chicago moved into first place in the National Hockey League with a 4-2 victory over Boston Sunday night. Bobby, the NHL's scoring champion who set records with 54 goals and 97 points last year, was kept off the scoreboard by the Bruins but it hardly mattered. Dennis kept the family reputation intact.

The younger Hull scored his fifth goal of the young season early in the second period against the Bruins and then set up Pierre Pilote's game-winner. Earlier he had assisted on Wally Boyer's first period goal. In other games Sunday night, Toronto battled back from a two-goal deficit, tying New York 3-3 and Detroit blanked Montreal 6-0.
