Resort to sucking the thumb that has been hit by a hammer may serve to alleviate the discomfort that follows the blow. Even calling the hammer names may take the mind off of the pain, caused by the blow, until the momentary pain subsides. In time of heavy pain or affliction, or in times of deep sorrow one needs a more permanent comforter - - - a more sustaining protection. Even friends can render only a small amount of aid in such cases. It is on such occasions that previous and regular attendance at church renders immeasurable help.
