Several files are at present raging the timber of the Cascade mountains, and vast volumes of smoke hang like funeral palls around the peaks which skirt the eastern borders of the valley. A fire which started near the head of the Clackamas has been in progress for about three weeks, and several hundred acres bavo been burned over.

Whilo returning from the Mt. Jefferson trip the late excursionists passed iu close proximity to a fire which was beginning to make considerable headway among the lir timber east of Alt. While at Ueimis" settlement they noticed another extensive conflagration which was raging among the mountains about three miles to the north, and over toward the Little Fork of the North Fork. It seemed to extend for miles through the timbered mountains, ami was rapidly traveling to the eastward.

They also learned that a large tiro swept through yuartzville a few davs since and consumed tiie old saw mill and several other buildings, besides a largo amount of cord wood.
