The Canadian rock group is known as one of the country's best live acts and their first single off the new album, Absolutely Anytime, climbed the charts of rock radio stations, staying in the Top 10 for several weeks.

"I hear the song in almost every town we go to, which is nice," explains Daniel Greaves, (lead vocals, harmonica and keyboards) who spoke to The Progress for a quick interview over the phone Wednesday from Kelowna where the band was setting up to play that night. "I'm finally getting some sleep now that I'm on the road," jokes the 31 -year-old singer, who just became a new dad in September with the birth of his daughter in Toronto. Daniel and Watchmen guitarist Joey Serlin have known each other for more than 30 years, so there is a strong bond there that makes for a good creative atmosphere. "We're on tour until Christmas Eve. This is what we do and I wouldn't have it any other way," says Daniel.

The evolution of the band that started out in 1988, has actually been very gradual. The last album before this latest one was released three years ago. They've got five CDs out and their Canadian sales have topped more than 300,000 copies. "You have to get sick of where you're at to excite your- good live show? "That's who we are. We started that way and we've always felt the need to reiterate the studio sound on stage if we can.

It's about putting forth the best show we can," he says. "The fans have been reacting pretty positively. In any shift of musicality, we're bound to pick up some new fans. I've had nothing but positive feedback so far." B.C. can be a tough place to tour through in winter.

"We have a bus and a driver when we're on tour. We've had some close calls on some of the mountains out there," he says. The fact is that The Watchmen don't really have to go out on tour on the road anymore. "That's because there are really are other forms of media we can get our message across with," he adds. "But we feel it's important to get in front of a live audience to get that incredible reaction and the gratification that we feel when we put on a great show." The opening band is By Divine Right, a band that has recorded hundreds of songs.

The catchy single Come For a Ride is off their 1999 CD Bless This Mess and it received some solid airplay. The Watchmen and By Divine Right play Area 51 For Rock It Boy Birthday Bash on December 10. Advance tickets are $20 through Ticketmaster or $22.50 at the door. self with a new direction. What we did with the latest CD (the use of high-tech samples and turn tables) is nothing new in the music world but it's new for us.

The new part is the sound we've experimented with. I'm sure we've gained some new fans and maybe lost a few." "Slomotion is probably our most significant work musically. We utilized technology to the fullest in our home studio," he says. "Most of the recording we did at home and then dumped it into the master session and out popped Slomotion. It's a more visual work, you see different things and colours.

It adds dimension. It's an experiment in rhythm, melody and sound-scape. There lots of ambiance on this record." The band tries to throw out the rule book with every new work. "Actually there haven't been any rules. We don't know what we've got until it's done," he muses.

The music press reports that The Watchmen are known for having strong melodies, crunchy guitar riffs and sturdy beats. "Melody-wise is kind of my department and I think we do excel at that," says Daniel. The Watchmen lead singer sees himself as a music creator and has completed some film score work, which he does in the off-tour times.
