Enquiries from soma of the leading eocietlee ia the city, which have been taken aa typical of the whole, enow that the amount of aichnere prevalent in Birmingham ainca Christmas has far exceeded that of any other period for very many years.

Tha Increase in the number of risk members began to be severely fait during the week ended the 4th of January, and the returns far the even weeks ended Saturday, Feb. 15, when it was obvious tha epidemics were pairing away, are sufficient to show that in many instances the sickness was 100 por cent, high than is usually the case and that on the average about 10 per cent, of tha members bare been on the boxfor longoror shorter period since Christmas. Fortunately tha larger societies are in such a sound financial position, possessing large reserves, that any abnormal increase in the benefits disbursed can be met with case, end no serious difficulty would be apprehended if the epidemics continued throughout the year. But while a large inroad has already been made in tha current years income, there is a geaorel belief that tho remaining portion of the year will fairly equalise tho average payments. On tha suu principle that after a storm comes a calm, there fa an impression among soma of the leading officials of friendly societies that the severity of the ill heffith will be fallowed by a prolonged period of good health.

But reverting to the reoent sickness and in our statistics we have only taken note of the prevalence of illness among the male members of oefatiea it is natural to tore first to those powerful organitttioM tin Anciint the Manchester Unity of considerably more than half Owing to the numerous courts and lodges Birmingham connected with those orders, it is impp fnli to oooortoia tho total Dttxnboff of tick members or tha amount disbursed in sick-pay, inasmuch ae the returns from each separate court or lodge are only forwarded to tha corresponding secretary of the district at the close of the year i but the rate of mortality may be taken aa a pretty good indication of tho enormous amount of the sickness. In Birmingham tho Foresters possess 61 courts and 5,400 members. During the first quarter of 1889 the nnmber of deaths was 37 (of which only one was from bronchitis one from inflammation of the lunge), and tha amount paid from tho funeral fund was 430. At present too return are only recorded far the first five weeks of this quarter, but during those five weeks there were 40 deaths (chiefly from bronchitis and inflammation), and more than 40(1 was paid from the funeral fund. It will thus be seen that the number of deaths are higher in much less than half ths quarter of 1890 than they were in tha whole quarter of last year and ths comparison fa still further significant when it Is stated that during ths quarter ended Christmas last only 225.

was paid out of the funeral fund. The sickness in many of the courts, vra are assured, has bean most excess! vs oopiee of tho seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, ana another to subjeets from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales." Adi the outward signs of success attended the production of A Pair of Spectacles" at tha Garrick Theatre last night, but, despite the cheers and laughter of tho audience, I am by no means confident that any lengthened career ia in store for the play. Mr. Sydney Grundy acknowledges his indebted no what particular play he has laid under contribution. The point is perhaps not an important one to tha general public, but while he was about it he might have been more candid.

Aa it stands, A Pair of Spectacles is undoubtedly very clever piece of work. It bristle with good lines, and him many touch ea of sentiment which, if rather trite, are for the moment effective but it ia absolutely unconvincing. In a word, its atmosphere is purely that of the theatre, not of real life. The framework of the play aeouu to demand a purely comio treatment, but, possibly because he waa waiting for the Garrick Theatre, Mr. Grundy has not boon content to bo comio.

What ia one to say of an elderly husband who, five minutes after a ace no of farcical jealousy, brings down tha curtain with a Bible quotation! The marvellous sincerity of Mr. Hare's acting triumphed over the incongruity, but the situation would not bear the least analysis. Briefly told, the subject of the play is tha temporary transformation of one nature by contact with its exact opposite. Mr. Benjamin GeUfinck (Mr.

John Hare) ia the absolute soul of good nature and generosity ba ia never happy unless he is relieving distress and contributing to tha well-being of those around him. Hia opposite is hie brother Gregory (Mr. Charles Grove), hard-headed millionaire, whose one rule in life is to keep his eyes open and hie pockets shut. Under the influence of Gregory, the benevolent Benjamin undergoes aa entire change. From being the most indulgent master, father, and husband in the world, he beoomee suspicious of his servants, almost tyrannical to nis son, and absurdly jealous of his charming young wife.

The transitions would pass muster well enough in a fares, but in comedy, that ia presumably intended to treat life as it is, they outrage belief. One absolutely refuses to accept the idea that the kindly old gentleman presented in tha first act with such consummate art by Mr. Here would condescend to open bis wife's writing-deck, or take from hie old ana well-tried servants the keys of the pantry. Of coune, in the end, the generous view of lifo is shown to ba the true one, and Benjamin, who in a literal a well aa a figurative sense hae been looking through hi brother spectacles, becomes hie old and natural self again. Being in an unusually optimistic vein, however, Mr.

Grundy, or bis French original, does not stop here, for the hard-fisted man of business turns out as good-natured as his brother. Having pouted out what seems to me a radical fault in the play, let me do justice to its genuinely amueing qualities. Except for one or two line, which, out of deference to the squeamish, may with advantage be omitted, the dialogue is in Mr. Grundy's best style bright, pointed, and full of happy touches. The burden of the in pretation fell almost entirety upon Mr.
