Van Damme came to the United States from Belgium nine years ago and signed a contract for a series of such low-budget films as "Blood-sport," "Kickboxer," "Lion-heart" and "Death Warrant." He is now free of that contract and said he has plotted his next four movies to raise him above his martial arts status and put him up with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, whom Van Damme admires.

Texas beauty files suit oyer alleged snub HOUSTON Outgoing Miss Texas USA Christy Bogard is suing beauty pageant producers in a $9.25 million federal case, alleging she was snubbed by not being invited to crown her successor. Miss Fort Worth, Katie Young, was crowned the 1992 Miss Texas USA late Tuesday by reigning Miss Universe, Lu-pita Jones of Mexicali, Mexico. Bogard and her attorneys contend it should have been her job to crown the new beauty queen, and they filed suit Tuesday against Miss Universe Inc. and Crystal Productions Inc.

During Bogard's reign, management of the Miss Texas USA pageant was transferred to Crystal Productions, which is owned and operated by Al and Gail Clark of Houston. The Clarks maintain Bogard had a contract with the former management, so Crystal Productions was not obligated to have her appear in its pageant. ewiiim mi i ft i 0 OMAHA, Neb. A St. Louis zoo is recalling a chimpanzee from a tiny Nebraska zoo that spent a $55,000 donation from entertainer Johnny Carson on a special building for the chimp.

But the Northeast Nebraska Zoo near Royal is fighting back, its director said Wednesday. Reuben the chimp, on loan from the St. Louis Zoological Park, is the only chimp and the leading attraction at the zoo near Royal, a community of about 90 located 140 miles northwest of Omaha. "The people of northeast Nebraska come here not to see any chimp. They come here to see Reuben.

He's like family. They know him, they know his personality," zoo founder and director Dick Haskin said. Carson, who spent his youth in Norfolk, gave $55,000 to the zoo a year ago for the chimp building, "We have spoken to him (Carson) on the subject, and his comment was, 'It doesn't make Haskin said. "He didn't know what if anything he could do about it. We're hoping public pressure will make the St.

Louis zoo change its mind," Haskin said. The St. Louis zoo wants Reuben to have other chimps to live with and is concerned the cages at Royal may be inadequate. A letter received this week and signed by Charles Hoessle, director of the St. Louis Zoological Park, criticized Haskin's plan to bring other chimps to the zoo.

But Haskin said, "I have socialized chimps in the past successfully with a lot less to work with than we have in the Carson building." He has been given a Sept. 1 deadline to return Reuben to St. Louis. A representative from the St. Louis zoo has seen the Carson building.

Japan stands in line for Elvis theme park By WOODY BAIRD Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. Elvis is alive and turning to Japan. Managers of Presley's Grace-land estate are looking for Japanese investors for an $80 million theme park based in Tokyo and focused on things Elvis and 1950s and '60s Americana. "We're receiving such an enthusiastic response, I think we'll have a deal put together and be in serious construction design within a year," Jack Soden, executive director of the Graceland division of Elvis Presley Enterprises said Wednesday. The Presley residence draws more than 600,000 visitors a year and is the centerpiece of a 32-acre tourist complex that takes in some $12 million annually.

Graceland's staff has been working on the Tokyo project for two years and is being assisted in the search for investors by the Japanese Development Bank, Soden said. "The Japanese have a warm nostalgic feeling about this era, or this perceived era, in the United States," Soden said. "The Japanese just haven't worried themselves with whether Elvis died of drugs or all that nonsense, Elvis alive, Elvis committed suicide, Elvis was an FBI agent. They just don't concern themselves with that." Plans for the Tokyo project call for a 4- to 6-acre domed park representing a 1950s American town with souvenir shops, theaters, nightclubs and exhibit halls. Exhibits and movie festivals are to include other American icons such as Marilyn Monroe and James Dean.
