Interment in Mt. Rose Cemetery. Viewing Sunday evening 7-9 p.m. CAPE TOWN, South Africa (UPI) A dying South African teen-ager received nearly a pint of his sister's bone marrow Sunday in the country's third successful marrow transplant operation. Surgeons said it would be 10 days before they could be sure the patient is out of danger.

The implantation was made on a 16-year-old boy of mixed blood at the heart transplant pioneering center Groote Schuur Hospital. The transferred marrow was syphoned from the bones of his younger sister. A hospital spokesman said the "marrow match is very good indeed." Both previous marrow transplant patients in South Africa died soon after their operations, the first in Johannesburg in 1972 and the second in Cape Town in 1973. The names of patient and donor were not released at the family's request. Doctors said the youth was suffering from severe anemia with 'dampened' or malfunctioning marrow producing an insufficient number of vital white blood cells.

"He would have died sooner or later," said a Groote Schuur spokesman. His dampened marrow was not functioning and he was very prone to infection." Nearly one pint of the sister's marrow was dripped into the circulatory system, of the patient, doctors said.

If it is not rejected, it will begin producing white blood cells in the patient's bones and maintain them at normal levels. No further implantation would be required. Rejection can set in within two or three days, but it will take 10 days of negative rejection symptoms before doctors can consider the transplantation successful. The operation was performed by Prof. Peter Jacobs, head of Cape Town University's medical school of hemeatology, who carried out the previous two bone marrow transplants.

Last week, surgeons implanted a second heart in an unnamed cardiac patient at Groote Schuur. It was the third such "double heart" implantation since Prof. Christian Barnard developed the technique last Nov. 25. The first patient died four months and nine days after the operation.

The second patient, who has lived with two hearts since New Year, and the latest recipient are both doing well, hospital spokesmen said.
