Since his break with the Mormons, Joseph has followed "the example of God's prophets" and put his belief in plural marriage into practice, marrying his latest -a 16-year-old in an April ceremony on the deesert. All his marriages have been religious, rather than civil, "I've got 13 or 14 wives living down here all together," he said, adding that the number fluctuates depending on who is in town. "I have a couple of wives out of the state right now." which said Joseph's clan and a dozen other families are trespassing on public land between Bryce Canyon and Lake Powell.

The judge allowed the Joseph's clan to stay on the land pending the outcome of the lawsuit. The homesteaders -most of whom are not polygamous have laid out 13 farms in Cottonwood Canyon 40 miles north of Kanab, an area the BLM said is not open for homesteading. "They say we are destroying the land," said Joseph. "But it was barren before we got there." Mrs. Mary M.

He does not try to hide his many marriages. "I don't do anything in secret," he said, and he proved it by recently appearing in federal court flanked by wives Judy and Carmen, whom he introduced to U.S. District Judge Aldon J. Anderson. "If they want to prove that I'm a polygamist, it's right there in the court record," he said.

The polygamist was in court to answer a lawsuit filed by the Bureau of Land Managment, bypass surgery becomes necessary when an artery developes a significant blockage. It involves removing a section of vein from the leg, connecting one end to the aorta and the other end to the obstructed artery, distal to the obstruction, thus bypassing the block. Approval for the hospital's cardiac surgical program has been obtained from the South Central Pennsylvania Health Planning Council and the Pennsylvania Comprehensive Health Planning Agency. When York Hospital first announced plans in 1973 for beginning a heart surgery program, a special search committee of administrative and medical staff was formed to obtain the services of a full time, highly qualified cardiac surgical team. "Ideally," according to its chairman, Dr.

Jack Gracey, "we wanted a surgeon to head up the program who was highly trained and currently active in an excellent program, but who believed enough in the potential in the York program to leave and come here on a full time basis." These goals have been fulfilled, the committee believes, in the recruitment of Dr. Joseph Hooper, who is currently at the Cleveland Clinic, which is the birthplace of the coronary bypass operation and is now a world leader in this type of surgery. Dr. Hooper; who will directing the heart surgery program at York Hospital; received his medical degree, from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1966. Following a year of internship, at the Harrisburg Hospital, he trained for four additional years as a resident in surgery at the same institution.

During the past two years he has been participating in the cardiovascular surgery training program as a Fellow at the. Cleveland Clinic and was-certified by the Americarjt Board of Surgery in 1974. Joining Dr. Hooper on the cardicac surgery team will be Dr. John Mathai, a car diothoracic surgeon already a.

member of the York Hospital, Staff. Dr. Mathai is trained in cardicac surgery and is certified by the American Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. During" 1974 he was elected as a Fellow of the American College ofi Surgeons. In order to update his knowledge and skills in the? rapidly progressing and changing specialty of cardiac surgery, Dr.
