York Daily Record, Wednesday, April 23, 1975 17 Poultry Rise Expected Food Price Inc Increases ses Slow Down By JEANNE LESEM The federal government food prices this year UPI Food Editotall are climbing at less than half the rate of last year's first quarter increase of 4.6 per cent. It expects the increase to continue at about the same speed during the spring, with most of the advances in red meat and poultry prices. This is small consolation to shoppers in cities like Cincinnati, Atlanta and New York City, where this week even ground chuck cost $1.09 to $1.19 a pound. In one chain in Manhattan, it was cheaper to grind your own beef: boneless chuck roast was selling for 99 cents a pound, 20 cents below the ground variety. The same cut, cubed for stew, was a whopping $1.59 per pound.

A low of 69 cents a pound was reported in only two cities, Los Angeles and San Francisco, in UPI's weekly survey of basic food prices. Elsewhere, the prices ranged upwards from 89 cents. In Washington, a U.S. Department of Agriculture announcement said tighter supplies and high prices for feed may lead to price increases for broilers and turkeys. But for this week, at least, broilers sold for as little as 41 cents a pound in Dallas, up only two cents from last week's low of 39 cents a pound in Buffalo and Atlanta.

They were only 49 cents in Birmingham, St. Louis, San Diego and Los Angeles and 51 cents a pound in Milwaukee. The high of 98 cents a pound in Honolulu was 15 cent above last week's high reported in Portland, Ore. The vote was 30-18 in favor of a resolution that let the 62- yearold Pittsburgh Democrat keep his seat -but asked him not to vote.

attend committee meetings or introduce legislation. The vote came at 9:40 p.m. after long caucuses by Republicans and Democrats that last for nearly five hours. In the end, most Republicans refused to go along with the compromise resolution. but Democrats defeated a GOP move to expel Mazzei.

The move was made by Sen. Thomas Andrews. R- Lawrence, and killed 27-21. Even at the same price per pound as chicken, turkeys are a better buy because they have a higher ratio of meat to bone. Small turkeys make great barbecues, and larger birds or turkey parts go a long way, deliciously, in stews like Mexican mole or Hungarian paprikash, sauced with sour cream and paprika.

The USDA reported eggs the best poultry buy for spring, and the UPI survey bore this out. Large grade A eggs sold for only 51 cents a dozen in Los Angeles, 52 cents in Jacksonville, and 55 cents in San Diego. Cheyenne had a high of 99 cents. Even at that price, eggs are less than nine cents each. News of sugar remained sweet, with the retail price of a five-pound bag below $2 in 24 cities on the UPI list.

Birmingham's $1.59 cents was the low, New York City's $2.39 and Philadelphia's $2.09, the highs.
