HUTCHINS The suggestion recently made by some members of the Kossuth County Historical Society that we resume bean suppers again, to which the whole Kossuth community will be welcome, recalls vividly the days of the famous bean suppers in Algona 60 years ago, when both the pioneers of our county and Veterans of the Civil War were among us in great and influential numbers, and community spirit and National patriotism were very high. Those were the days when people depended mostly on their own abilities for educational development or entertainment and all people were caused to grow stronger characters than tends to occur nowadays, when so much time is spent in looking at movies and television pictures which feature crimes and mysteries. Life was very real and earnest in those days. All the more, it seemed then, did folks and neighbors enjoy the eagerly patronized "get to- gethers" of the community bean suppers, where the most delicious foods, raised here and prepared by the finest cooks of the school of experience, were available to all, Beans, to be sure mingled with Nature's finest "pork" and sorghum molasses, were a main feature; but the other viands of cake and pies, sauces and pickles were "out of this world," No wonder the spirit of friendship ran high and the eloquence of orators from near and far was never excelled. Memorable was the occasion of the bean supper held amid G. A. R. Veterans and pioneers in the old "Wigwam" located on the site west of the present movie theatre. Senator Albert B. Cummins was the main speaker and star attraction. How his voice throbbed with well- nigh uncontrollable emotion. Not only statesmen, but many other speakers of note we re given opportunity to voice their eloquence and diffuse words of information and wisdom at the famous old-time bean suppers. If it will be practicable to begin a new series of suppers patterned after them, it seems as if they might become a very influential factor of education and inspiration in the Kossuth community and a real power in promoting its general understanding and unification. Our modern times are filled with uncertainties and prospects of future dangers; and we may well cultivate actively the principle, "In Union there is strength," The Kossuth Historical Society will hold a Washington Birthday Bean Supper at the VFW hall here, Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 5 to 7:30 p. m. The menu will contain all of the items featured in the "good old days." Cars approaching a stopped school bus with its stop sign extended shall stop to allow loading and unloading children safely.
