Do It Every Time IT 'ER. HU98AMD A HE PROBABLY USES a on the Library Houses Tolkien's Works MILWAUKEE 'UPls The Marquette University is an unpretentious modern building of bnck and glass, not at all the kind of place you would expect to be the home of dragons, elves, dwarfs and smail furry-footed creatures called hobbits But the library basement, tucked away amongst all the musty tjooks of learning and science reside the original manuscripts of four books that make up one of literature most beloved fantasies and "The Lord of The Rings" trilogy by Ft Tolkien John Ronald Rtuel Tolkien, who died in 1973 at the age of 81, was an Oxford don, a famous philologist and scholar of ancient myths and a fnend of Lewis and other English literary giants all in all an unlikely creator of a fantasy that would capture the imaginations of millions of readers But his tales of "Middle Earth," the world he invented com plete with ancient history and several languages, did just that and before his death made him the center of a worldwide cult The Tolkien legend will grow this (all with the publication in September of "The Silmanl- his final work The book was edited and mi shed by his son Christopher and it details more of the history and legends that predate his four books When "The SilmariUion" comes out the small library on this campus is likely to get a new influx of Tolkien fans and a resurgence of interest in the manuscripts which have proven to be one of the best investments the university ever made "The was published in 1937 and it took Tolkien until 1955 to finish the trilogy that followed It was ar. instant success but Tolkien, an Oxford don with a small income, didn't become instantly rich Thus, in 1957 he agreed to sell his manuscripts to Marquette University for about $5.000 It was just one of those happy circumstances for the university that we had an alert said the Rev Raphael Hamilton, a Jesuit pnest who was chief archivist at the university from 1962 to 1971 and is now retired We got them for a modest sum and since then, 1 know, we have been offered $50,000 for them by another university Hamilton did much of the classifying of the materials which include Tolkien's original hand-written scripts as well as copies of corrected galley proofs He wrote much of the trilogy during World War II when paper was at a premium in England and his small, tight hand covers both sides of the paper he used The papers are penciled over with numerous corrections that showed the work Tolkien put into the decades-long project He was such a perfectionist, "the Rev Hamilton said He just write this off the top of his head You look at the manuscripts and very heartening to young authors He would scratch and then put in a word and scratch and work and then paste another piece of paper and the whole thing would be new And then when the typed script would come he was still working on it Oh, he was just such a Hamilton said the university was able to pull off the coup of gaining Toliden's papers because of a former director of libraries, Will Ready, who was bom in Wales and came to Marquette in 1953 He knew about The the first book Toikien wrote It was a children's book about this Middle that became so amous later Hamilton laid was very en thusiastic about it and said, 1 think this is going to be a classic Being from England and a book man he knew an agent and contacted the publisher of Tolkien to buy them "Tolkien wasn't a wealthy man at all and it was some cash he could use And he accepted it Tolkien reportedly needed the money to help buy a new home and so the university got his manuscripts for a bargain- basement pnee Several smaller manuscripts also came to Marquette including an unpublished work called "Mr Bliss It is a story that Tolkien illustrated himself and deals with Mr Bliss and his problems after buying an automobile The story is based on Tolkien own problems with cars and the university would like to publish it if it can be worked out with Tolkien's estate The trilogy was first made available in quantity in America with its paperback publication in 1965 and it soon became a favorite of college students Since then groups devoted to Tolkien have up and their fervor has been such that they have even learned to speak a language he invented for the book and for which he formulated rules of grammar and pronunciation The Tolkien boom has tailed off in recent years but there may be a new wave of it because of the new book and film and television projects portraying his stones that are currently under way was classifying them slowly and then everything went Hamilton said "The college students got really interested in him it is a very intriguing story and I think the youngsters of those days were sort of at sea and looking for something idealistic Tolkien has said he write it (the as a moral but it seems to be the good and noble sort of triumphing over the base and evil It is a very much loved storv It is a classic. I think It will endure like Alice in Wonderland The Rev Robert Callen. another Jesuit pnest, is now the chief archivist at the Marquette Library lie said interest in Tolkien has remained strong among scholars who come to study his papers and fans who want to gaze upon the original work of the author are really too precious to just let anyone see them and touch them, he said.

many people are cunous and very intelligent about these works But we just handle them The university makes the works available to serious of Tolkien That included Humphrey Carpenter, who recently published the authorized biography of ien The pressure to see the manusenpts isn't likely to abate soon and will likely increase with the new interest in Tolkien that is sure to follow the publication of marillion Marquette is famous as a dental and law school and, nght now, as the home of the NCAA basketball champion Wamors But for some purists of Tolkien lore it is forever endeared as something resting place of Tolkien's manusenpts and of Middle and all that entails Here, forever, live hobbits, and elves, aml dwarfs and "The Lord of The Microwave Radiation Puzzling WASHINGTON (ITU In an approved but not yet published consumer pamphlet on microwave oven radiation, the Food and Drug Administration faces the safety issue Excerpts from the text obtained by United Press International follow microwave ovens manufactured after October 1971 must meet standards set by the Food and Drug Administration Based on the understanding of scientists these assure that the ovens present no radiation hazard under normal conditions of (Some scientists disagree but the pamphlet makes no men tion of their opinions i is known that microwaves, by producing heat, can bum just as any other sour ce of heat can bum The body 's natural defense against bums is to send blood to cool the area being heated Some parts of the body have little blood cir euiation Because of this, the lens of the eye is more susceptible than any other body organs to microwave radiation, just as it is to any other source of heat If the lens of the eye receives loo much heat, it can develop a cataract Also, the testicles require lower than normal body temperature When the testicles are subjected to any dramatic increase in temperature, including that caused by microwaves sperm can be altered or killed, producing temporary stenlity or even genetic defects is not completely understood yet is how exposure to low levels of microwave radiation affects people Ex- penmental animals have displayed an avoidance reaction That is, they tned to get away from the microwaves when they were exposed to small amoun ts "Temporary behavioral changes such as irritiability and nausea have been reported in people when they were occupationally exposed to low levels of microwaves for long periods of time scientists don yet know how to fit these two pieces together If the avoidance reaction of animals related to the temporary behavior changes in Another effect shown in animals exposed to low levels of microwaves is an immune response That is, lymphocytes in the blood, which are part of the body's natural defense against diseases, are produced as if responding to an illness not known exactly what ramifications this kind of response might have for the organism Nor is it known whether or not a similar response might occur in people the understanding of the effects of microwaves and the fact that much is not yet known clearly important that government agencies control the unnecessary or hazardous exposures to microwave energy ovens are designed with a number of safery features required by the Food and Drug Administration to make sure that people be exposed to levels of accidental exposure to high levels of bum from microwaves would feel the same as a bum from any other source of intense heat However, it is virtually impossible to get burned by microwaves from a microwave oven since microwaves will not be generated if the door is open There have been claims of microwave radiation-related in- junes from microwave ovens but the Food and Drug Administration says in the pam phlet none of these have been substantiated upon investigation CREDIT Right now there an? over 300 million credit cards in use in the United States and consumers use them to pay for everything from television sets to tuxedos More than half of all retail sales are made on credit and in one year, the National Business Council for Consumer Affairs reported that there was $137 billion outstanding in consumer credit in the United States Interestingly, the term was first used in 1887 by Edward Bellamy, a lawyer and author, who in his book "Looking for- saw a society in which each citizen was the holder of a yearly credit card issued by the government which paid for all necessary goods and services I VAlirr HOMING MFOftMATKM TO PIACI SUBSCRIPTION OR RtrPORT KUVftY SfRVfCE rf CAU S4MMi 4M 423 551 Mofi 6S9- Ico hno-City T97-7151V, 0 464 2604, Fmnos sMcAWtn Soulh 686-4433' iScAtWn North 666 8 U0'' (Marx City i WiiSioo Rural lidM A iRovmcndv.tl« jRovwndvttfp iRw Hondo ks Gronde City Scruto I oco City I oco Rural 797-7151 585-2133 585-6240 1 043-1845 787 2806 689-3448 689-2003 748 2598 487-2817 423-5511 383 3723 968-5997 SUBSCRIPTION RATE S3.50 MONTH tyISS YOUR PAPER?
