News Capsules Dropped LOS ANGELAS (AP) - The number of weekly programs NBC has canceled rose to five Tuesday as the network confirmed industry reports it was dropping the “Quest” and “Serpico” series from its evening schedule. NBC on Monday said it had canceled Dick Van Dyke’s comedy-variety series. It earlier axed “Gemini Man” and NBC’s Wednesday night TV movie series. All five canceled series were in their first season on television, and all had low ratings. Top show NEW YORK (AP) — ABC’s “Happy Days” was the top- rated television show for the week ending Dec. 5, according to A. C. Nielsen figures made available Tuesday. The week’s lowest-rated show was an NBC documentary, “The Sometime Soldiers,” seen in 6.2 million homes. The average national ratings for the week put ABC in first place again, with NBC remaining in the third spot for the second week in a row after three weeks at the top. Phone names MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Public Service Commission ruled Tuesday that wives are entitled to have their first names listed with their husbands’ names in telephone books. The Wisconsin Telephone Co. had opposed the move, saying it would result in increased printing costs that will be passed on to its customers. Auction BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) - An $872,000 offer by a New York jewelry firm was the winning bid Tuesday at the auction of the 126-acre estate of bankrupt insurance magnate Charles S. Pritchard Jr. The auctioneer had hoped for an offer of $1 million, but the top bid still was the largest sum offered at a bankruptcy sale of a private residence in New Jersey. La Scala MILAN, Italy (AP) — Milan’s famous La Scala opera house opened its 388th season on time Tuesday night despite street battles between riot police and leftist militants armed with fire bombs. The leftists had vowed to disrupt the season premier, saying it was staged only to let the rich display their jewels, furs and limousines. Many patrons left their luxury cars at home and instead arrived in taxis to see the nationally televised performance of Verdi’s “Othello.” DeiYionstrate TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) - Arab youths threw rocks at Israeli vehicles in the occupied West Bank town of Nablus Tuesday on the second day of protests against a new Israeli- imposed sales tax. The army ordered a curfew and dispersed several hundred demonstrators in the town’s Casbah, or market place, an occupation spokesman said. Satellite TOKYO (AP) - China sue- cessfully launched a manmade earth satellite Tuesday, Peking radio announced Wednesday. It was the seventh satellite launched by China since its first satellite went into orbit on April 24, 1970. The sixth was launched on Aug. 30 this year. Oil WASHINGTON (AP) — The Interior Department said Tuesday it is withdrawing 28 ocean tracts off the shores of New England from consideration for petroleum leasing in the summer of 1977. No final decision has yet been made to lease any of the some 1.2 million acres suggested for Interior for possible oil and gas exploration. Further tracts may be withdrawn as the department reviews comments from oil companies, environmentalist groups and others. Supreme Court rules against maternity leave WASHINGTON (AP) — 'Company disability and sick leave programs do not have to include coverage for pregnancy, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday. The court said in a 6-3 decision that a General Electric disability benefits plan that excludes pregnancy coverage does not violate the Civil Rights Act or the equal protection safeguards of the Constitution. The ruling means that a company voluntarily setting up a new disability plan for em- _ ployes does not have to include a ‘ provision to continue the salary of a woman absent from work because of pregnancy. It also means that current plans that have no maternity disability pay do not have to be changed. _The decision brought immediate reaction from women’s rights groups, with Karen De Crow, president of the National Organization for Women, called it “insulting to every mother in the country.” “The court stated that men and women are treated equally under such a plan because, if a man is pregnant, he will be treated in the same manner as a woman. Such a definition of sex discrimination is indeed unique,” she said. Linda Dorian, the attorney who wrote a brief on behalf of the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in support of women workers, called the decision “the most significant reversal women’s rights groups have had in the courts.” And, David J. Fitzmaurice, president of the International Union of Electrical Workers, said he will seek legislation to make discrimination because of pregnancy illegal. Boscov^s .AT BIG SAVINGS! PRICE BREAK!
