Jenkins from 10a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Eversole Mortuary. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at Russian River Cemetery Chapel. ;Mr. Jenkins died Friday, Jan. 28,2000, in Santa Rosa after losing a battle with leukemia. He was 73. ; '.He was born Jan. 18, 1927, and was raised and educated in Stillwater, Okla. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served during 'World War II. .' Mr. Jenkins was married for 53 years to Joyce States Jenkins, for- .merly of Perry, Okla. He was a building contractor and rancher, who ;enjoyed team roping and aviation and spending time with his family and friends. ' Surviving are his wife, Joyce Jenkins of Santa Rosa; daughters, Brenda Nielsen and her husband Martin of Clayton, Pam Houpe of 'Bentonville, Ark., Kathy Stone and her husband Bud of Roosevelt, Utah, Cindy Carley and her husband Rick of Ukiah, and Kerri Twomey and her husband Jeff of Foster City. Also surviving are a sister, Erma Turner and her husband Tal of Sweethome, Ore.; brothers Lovell and Jim Butler; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nine nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions to the Leukemia Foundation or the World War II Veteran's Memorial Fund, Washington, D.C., are preferred by the family. ARREST r- Robert Vinson, 46, of Ukiah, was arrested at 4:37 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of drunken driving following a traffic stop in 'the 300 block of North Main Street. He was cited and released. ARREST - Police arrested Casimir Janusz, 22, of Ukiah, at 5:58 p.m. Saturday after breaking up a fight between as many as 10 people fighting in the 500 block of South Dora Street. Janusz was taken to county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. ' ARREST - Police arrested Robert Harold Shelton, 36, of Ukiah, at 8:14 p.m. Sunday on suspicion of domestic violence following a fight in the 700 block of South Dora Street. Shelton was taken to county jail. CHP REPORTS The following were compiled from reports prepared by the California Highway Patrol: DUI ARREST - Everett D. Laster, 32, of Redwood Valley, was arrested at 9:50 p.m. Friday on East Road north of School Way on suspicion of drunken driving. DUI ARREST - Robin L. Mannerly, 38, of Fort Bragg, was arrested at 3:58 a.m. Saturday on Tomki Road on suspicion of drunken driving. DUI ARREST - Eleazar Garcia, 29, of Salinas, was arrested at 9:01 p.m. Saturday on Highway 101 near Highway 175 in Hopland on suspicion of drunken driving. DUI ARREST - Jesus Pena, 28, of Willits, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Highway 101 north of Steele Lane on suspicion of drunken driving. DUI-ACCIDENT - Manuel M. Bautista, 37, of Ukiah, was injured Saturday when he lost control of his 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck on a curve on North State Street and-the vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned. The accident occurred at 11:45 p.m. as Bautista was driving north just north of Central Avenue in Calpella, state traffic officers say. Bautista was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion and bruises over his left eye. He was taken to Ukiah Valley Medical Center for treatment. The Ukiah man was later arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. DUI ARREST - Guadalupe C. Silva, 19, of Boonville, was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Sunday on Highway 128 at Anderson Valley Way on suspicion of drunken driving. HAIL CAUSES ACCIDENT - Two people escaped with minor injuries from a two-car collision on the Ridgewood Grade Sunday afternoon. State traffic officers say Manuel R. Dominguez, 32, of Willits, was driving north on Highway 101 at 3:48 p.m. when his 1986 Toyota Camry collided a Honda Accord driven by Jenna L. Griswould, 24, of Willits. Griswould was also driving north when she apparently lost control of her car in a hail storm and the vehicle spun out of control in front of Dominguez'car. . Griswould escaped uninjured, but Dominguez and a 2-year-old passenger in Griswould's car, Mikaela Wright of Willits, both suf : fered minor injuries. Both were taken to Ukiah Valley Medical Center for treatment. DUI ARREST - James Moody, 63, of Redwood Valley, was arrested at 9:46 p.m. Sunday on School Way at East Road on suspicion of drunken driving. Those arrested by law enforcement officers are Innocent until proven guilty. Ukiahi Lab Continued from Page 2 ASB and sports programs would suffer if both varsities played on the same night. Both teams draw solid, somewhat overlapping, crowds, the totals of which would decrease if they played on the; same nights. Since the ticket money is pooled in ihe ASB and allocated by need rather than sfmply returned to the teams which generated the ticket sales, this loss of revenue would effect all ieams negatively. The last point, increasing interest in girls' basketball, seems reasonable until one looks more closely. When I asked some of the members of our girls' basketball team, they were incensed that anyone would think that playing on the same night as the boys', especially in the "JV" spot, would enhance their game. They already generate genuine interest and have developed a loyal, intense and ever-increasing' following. They do not need to hang on to the boys' shirttails for help. In truth, the members of the boys' teams are among their biggest fans, support that is reciprocated. Girls' and boys' sports are different, as different as the boys and girls themselves. If this were not true, girls would not have a "league of their own." For the fan who applies the same standards and expectations to all levels of a sport, the skill levels below the professional ranks must be disappointing. For hardcore amateur fans, professional athletics are joyless and financially bloated. Thankfully most fans watch city league, middle school, high school, college and professional sports, both male and female, with a different perspective for each. The questions then become are the games exciting, do the players perform at the highest levels of their abilities, are the spirit and enthusiasm infectious. Having argued that the parent request is unrealistic, the truth may be somewhere in between. If the issue had been defined simply as "who should play on Friday night?" the only concern weald have been financial, hardly significant when a question of equity is concerned. One possible solution would be to schedule Friday night for boys' games one half of the season and for girls' games tl ? ether half. This might generate less money at some schools but would establish an equitable use of facilities. As new issues arise in redefining sex equity, I hope that we do not forget that our goal is to provide quality experiences and equal opportunity for everyone. In the assignment you will see today, students were given the results of a research .study in which alligators were measured and weighed and were asked to find a way to correlate those data. Their work is reprinted without the numerous formulae, graphs and charts that appeared in the originals. See ya later, alligator By JILL RUSHTON Often in order to study alligators from a safe distance, researchers monitor their populations by taking aerial photographs. From these pictures, or from other sightings from the air or by boat, they can easily estimate quite accurately the length of an alligator, but the weight of the alligator is more difficult to estimate. In my statistical study, I will attempt to remedy this problem by developing an equation that would let a researcher plug in the estimated length of the alligator in question for X and get an estimate on the weight for the alligator for the answer Y. First I make a scatter plot of alligator length versus alligator weight. There are two outliers. One outlier is at (147, 640), and the other is at (114, 197). From the shape of the scatter plot, I can tell that the data is not going to fit the linear regression line well at all. The curved shape of the data suggests two different possible models to me. I believe that if I analyze the two models of weight = Aolength3 and weight =Aoelength, one will fit the data. The first possible model makes sense because an alligator is a Rushton three-dimensional object. Therefore it would make sense that as its length increases; the body mass would increase to the third power of the length. The second model makes sense because it is the natural log, and is frequently observed in action within nature. I concluded from my study that the best equation to use to estimate the weight of alligators from an estimated length is lnweight=length. However, this equation will not be very convenient for the researchers because it would require them to convert the equation themselves so that they could calculate the weight from the equation. From the regression equation I developed, I discovered that Inweight=1.333+.035416 (length). Therefore by using the natural logarithmic properties I described in the introduction, I will convert the equation into weight=(e 1.3353)+ .035416(length). This can then be broken up into Weight=(e 1.3353) e 03416(length) in turn can be simplified by multiplying out e 1.3353 which equals 3.8011. Therefore, the usable equation is weight=3.8011(e ,3416(length). In my study, it would have been good to know more precisely how the data were collected. For example, in the data I was given, it simply said that the data came from alligators in central Florida. The problem with this is that in central Florida there are different breeds of alligators and also there are different sexes. With these changing characteristics, the weight can vary greatly. Also, this equation cannot be used outside of central Florida because the sample did not take the average length and match it to weight from a random selection of alligators from all over the World. It simply selected some in Florida. These alligators could be better fed, and therefore weigh more than other alligators in Africa, South America, and even in other states such as Radish Louisiana. It would also have helped to have a larger sample. The sample I was provided with was only of 25 . alligators. The equation would have been much more accurate if there had been more alligators to include. Alligators project By BEN WATERMAN AND MELINDA RADISH To protect certain species and to know their whereabouts, most wildlife populations are monitored by aerial photographs. Photographs such as these can accurately estimate the length of an alligator; the weight, however, is slightly tougher to measure. But with the help of data from alligators that were caught in Florida, we will help prove that you can extrapolate the weight of an alligator based on its length. First we did a test comparing alligator length versus weight to see if there was any linear correlation. We computed the data and created a graph showing that linear correlation did not occur between length and weight. Then we tried the model of weight-bO + bl (lengths). We multiplied the length with itself three times and compared those numbers to the alligator's weight. From the scatter plot and hypothesis test, we observed that the graph was linear, and the data correlated. The test to follow, with a hypothesis (Ho) of no correlation and an alternate hypothesis (HI) of correlation, helps prove that the data is correlated because the test statistic (.98643) is higher than the critical value (+ or - .39607), which rejects the hypothesis (Ho). The predicted equation would then be: WEIGHT .= (-34.818) + (.000197KLENGTH3). Next, we ran the residuals for the previous graph to be one hundred percent sure the length cubed and the weight were linearly correlated. This scatter plot Waterman showed, in •actuality, that the regression line is not a good fit because of the cleat- path that the points make. Now, —————— for the second time, we tried a new model. We went back to using the regular length and compared it to the natural log of the weight. Once again we got linear correlation, so we ran another linear regression test with the same hypothesis (Ho) of no correlation and alternate hypothesis (HI) of correlation. The test helps prove that the graph is linearly correlated, because the test statistic (.97983) is larger than the critical value (+ or - .39607), which rejects the hypothesis (Ho). Then we built a scatter plot graph of the residuals for the length versus the natural log of the weight. This residuals graph did show linear correlation; we now had a good model to predict the weight from the length of an alligator. There were some weaknesses to this experiment such as the number of alligators used; the fact that the only alligators used were from Florida; and the amount of small alligators compared to larger ones. All of the data, which has been brought forward in this exercise, proves that you can determine an alligator's weight simply by recording its length. I'm sure this information will help environmentalists and animal-lovers with their researches and studies of alligators. Continued from Page 1 and DNA samples are handled at a Berkeley lab. Supporters of the proposition say it will lead to improving DNA testing, which identifies criminals through blood and bodily fluids, and it will also reduce the number of drunken drivers that go free by providing improved equipment for identifying blood-alcohol content. Supporters also say the measure will reduce the case backlog and improve testing of evidence so that fewer innocent people will be charged with crimes. Language in the proposition calls for an independent body within the Departmenf of Justice for reviewing applications to fund the building of new forensic labs and for renovating existing labs.
