Following is a brict description of certain religious customs of the people of India, copied from tlie Missionary of the World for July: "In the vicinity of a certain village is a groye known as the 'Meria Grove' with vacant space in the centre. The sacrilicial festival consumes three days. Afi-r one day of drunken riot and excess, with musical accompaniments, the victim A human being is clad in gay attire and borne to the centre of the grove and iied to a post, an nointed with oil, butter and tumeric, and, amid revolting orgies, treated as an object of worship. On the third day, the great day of the feast, the ceremony the climax of horror and of cruelty. The victim must be unbounded and unresisting, and to insure entire submission the bones of hands and legs hid usually broken, and the head is thrust through a rift or a slit made in large branch of a tree.

With the neck firmly held in this vise.and the extremities held by cords, the Priest gives the signal by a sharp blow with a hatchet on the shoulders of h-i victim; then instantly, like a pack of maddened bloodhounds, the whole multitude pounce upon the helpless being, and in a few moments every shred of flesh is torn from the naked skeleton and thing over tho fields as a tribute to the goddess of the sacrifice. And this is only one pecimen of th-se institutions tliat exist among this people. When Buchanan was fifty miles from Juggernaut's Shrfne, he knew it by the bones which paved his pathway, the" remains of millions of devotees crushed beneath the gigantic ear of that, hideous idol-God; aiid when he came near the altars and fanes, he found them covered with tlie green slime of the leprosy of lust, and the red stains of human blood; he saw-that two cruelty and sensuality adequately described the wor-ship of this monster." Since it is true as is acknowledged by-many able writers that "'religion is a universal factor in race development;" if as is-found, man will have a religion, then tlu common dictates of an enlightened philanthropy will say that he should if possible have a better religion than is here described. If Religion be as Matthew Arnold says, only "morality touched by emotion," it needs to be, for man's best welfare, lubetter religion than is here described. However much objectors may say againstChristiaiiity, it must be admitted by every candid mind that th i system of truth and of worship promulgated by Jesus' Christ and his immediate followers, a vastly better religion than is here described.

Is it not remarkably tratign that those who try so hard to prove tlie religion of Christ aj fraud, yet persistently prefer to make the countries blessed by its Presence anil influence their home, rather than to tind a dwelling in those climes blesscd(?) by the hallowed influence of buddhism, shintoisui or fetichism May TUankTlIer Stars. On and after Monday, November 11, 1889, passenger trains will run as follows: under this clause taken from the apportionment act, 1 It says: "The Twelfth District, of the County of Dauphin, to which the County of Lebanon is hereby attached, and shall have two judges learned in the law." Judge Simouton was elected in LSS1; Judge Mcl'herson in 1XS2; Judge Simonton's term expires on the livst Monday of January, lsiltl, and Judge MePherson's one year later. If there is no apportionment, one judge the successor of Simouton will be elected next year.

If there is an apportionment, which iv. altogether probable) will Dauphin county have two judges, and if so, who will be. the additional judge? or will Judge Mcl'herson return to Dauphin county, and will there be a new judge to elect in All these are doubtless inter matters of conversation among the, during this summer solstice. It is only interesting, however, in view of the possible increase in the number of judges, as it is very generally understood thai, if there is no increase in the number the present able judges Simouton and Mcl'herson will be re-elected without opposition. Ilarrisbtny Tclaorupk.

Under the recent census Lebanon county shown a population exceeding which will entitle it to become a seperate judicial district, under a new apportionment. Heretofore the county has been attached to Dauphin, whicli has really elected both judges, although one has been required by law to reside in Lebanon. Whilu Lebanon will now get, a judge by itself there is a strong probability that Dauphin will be accorded two. The separation of these counties will prove quite as agreeable to one as to the other. Lebanon has never quite liked the idea of taking a Dauphin judge, and Dauphin has felt, that without Lebanon attached it would have had two judges for its own use.

The results of the census are going to prove similarly pleasant in several other enmities. J'hiludclpniu I'. e-'S. The "wind is passing over the oats stubbles" and that is the first harbinger. How time Hies Years, which seemed like on age when we were boys and girls, now speed away and are gone ere we think of it. Many of our citizens spent last Sabbath at Mt.

Gretna The Sunday schools suffered considera-able in their attend nice. Several of the pastors are away on their vacation, so there was only one chui ch service, hence our church-going people took advantage of the situation aud had their vacation too. Annville is furnishing its quota of spectators to "The Last Bays ot Pompeii." Every exhibition day large numbers from here are in attendance aiid the universal verdict is that it is grand, ami so your correspondent falls in wftli the large majority and votes that way, too. The representation of thts ancient city, the sports and and games of the festival day, the worship of the golden calf, and the towering Vesuvius which finally pours its volume of death and destruction upon the unfortunate city are all very realistic, but the fireworks which follow are simply superbly magnificent. The crowds attending it are immense, too, but order prevails and everybody can he comfortable.

Mr. Daniel Saylor and family, of North Carolina, are visiting biotheisand relatives here. On Thursday of last week they had a family reunion and picnic at the old homestead near Jonestown. It was a day ot delightful recreation, and happy reminiscences such as they will not likely enjoy verv frequently any more. We hear very little of politics yet.

Annville has a number of candidates for county offices. Thev are working quietly making a still hunt, as it were, and on the State ticket the battle has not yet begun. Of course, it is not at all an uncertain contest here. Everybody knows that Annville will roll no a big majority for Delamater and the whole ticket. The Water Company (No.

A limited number of these bonds are offered for sale.

The Lebanon Trust and Safe Deposit Bank can furnish lull information touching them. We also learn that Messrs. The fact that Mr. Coleman is so closely connected with the road would seem to lie a good guarantee.

Mr. Coleman is broad and liberal in the use of his very large fortune and has laid the foundation for its increase in a way that a generous use of money only can do. In that particular he has the advantage of most men and for that reason can surpass them in the scope of his operations. Besides he has the nerve to dare where some would faint.
