WITH COMPLIMENTARY GLASS OF WINF 13.95 INDEPENDENCE (AP) — A million-volt transmission line car- tying power from the Pacific Northwest .-.to Southern California'was sabotaged by someone who toppled two supporting towers, officials said Saturday. Guy wires to the towers holding the Pacific Intertie transmission line were cut at 10:18 p.m. Friday, toppling them and damaging three other towers nine miles norm of this eastern Sierra community, said Ed OFFFR GOOD SUN/DAY. MEDICAL CO, _ 463-0160 Freudenburg, spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Communities nearby recorded a drop in power when the incident occurred, but there were no outages, Freudenburg said. There was no question the damage was the work of one or more vandals, he said.' 'The county sheriff has been notified and the FBI is doing an investigation," he said No similar acts of vandalism have occurred in the area recently, he said "This is very unusual for the Los Angeles area/' he said The towers, located near U.S. Highway 395, approximately 200 miles north of Los Angeles, are part of the 846-mile Pacific Intertie system that carries electricity from The Dalles, Ore., to.Southern Califomi- a. The line that was damaged transfers power from stations in the Pacific Northwest to a station in the Los Angeles suburb of Sylmar, Freudenburg said The spokesman said it was too early to determine the cost of repairs, but noted, "This is the largest amount of damage that has occurred to mis type of line since the system*was built in 1970." The direct-current line is capable of carrying up to 1 million volts of electricity, enough.to illuminate two cities the size of Seattle, said Robert Reed, spokesman for the Bomeville Power Administration in Portland, Ore. However, the line was not in heavy use at the time it was damaged, Freudenburg said. ' 'The line was not carrying sufficient power last night to cause an outage," he said. Freudenberg said crews were beginning repairs and expected to .have the line back in operation by the beginning of the week He said no power outages were anticipated while repairs were under way. "The utilities using the line had planned to get along without it anyway." Reed said the line hag not been heavily used in recent month* because stream flows in the Pacific • Northwest are 30 percent below normal, curtailing the generation of electricity. "We haven't sold any electricity to Southern California since February because of the tow stream flow situation," the BPA spokesman said. GM recalls half-million 82 vehicles WASHINGTON (AP)—General MotorPCorp. has begun recalling 472,600 1982-model Chevrolet^ Pontiacs and OMC vehicles because they put an excess of gasoline fuir.es into the air. The models affected by the recall, which began Friday, are the 1982 Chevrolet Impala, Caprice Classic, Camaro, Malibu Classic, Monte Carlo and El Camino, the 1982 Pontiac Firebird and CMC Caballero light truck. The vehicles are equipped with 3.8-, 4.4-, S- and 5.7-Gter engines, General Motors said. The Environmental Protection Agency said the vehicles have a faulty thermal-vacuum switch, part of the emissions-control equipment required by federal regulations, which failed to open. The fumes are eventually released into the air, where they form terrestial ozone, a chemical that "irritates the eyes, mucous membranes and the respiratory system," the EPA said. ' It impairs the normal functioning of the lungs and reduces the' ability to perform physical exercise," the agency said. Detroit-based GM said it began mailing letters to owners of the vehicles on Friday. The automaker said it would install "new and improved" switches on the vehicles, a procedure takmg less than an hour. The company said the malfunctioning switch does not affect vehicle operation.
