REPUBLIC CITY 30 The Arizona Republic Phoenix, Sat., April 5,1969 Hamburg String Sextet's offering consistently rich Austin's clergy leaders plead for Him decency By BINA BREITNER Republic Music Critic The Hamburg String Sextet is closing the Phoenix Chamber Music Society's season with its second and final concert tonight, and if it turns out as well as last night's it will have been worth your attendance. Last night the German group of two violins, two violas and two celli performed three works of varying eras and interest: Brahm's lustrous String Sextet in G, Op 36; Bohuslav Martina's atonal String Sextet; and Tchaikow- sky's String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70, the romantic "Souvenir de Florence." Performances, including the Richard Strauss encore, were consistently rich. It is surprising how much difference an extra violin and cello make; instead of resembling a string quartet, the sextet became a small chamber orchestra. That they played with great energy and strength, of course, added to the density of sound. And aside from first violinist ;Friedrich Wuehrer's occasional intonation errors and a slight . tendency to push bows to the point of roughness, the sextet performed to technical satisfaction—and sometimes brilliance. •Theatrical lawyer 'dies in New York t f NEW YORK (UPI)-Arnold |.R. Krakower, 53, a lawyer spe- !cializing in theatrical and Divorce cases, died in New ;York Hospital yesterday. He had represented such stars as Marlene Dietrich, Walter Matthau, Hcdy Lamarr, .and Maureen Stapleton. Interpretation was nearly always on top of the music; only in the Brahms did a composer's intensity and scope really challenge them. The Tchaikowsky flowed with Germanic overlay on Russian appreciation of the Italian city; Martinu's sextet moved in chunks of integrated sound within a secure structure; and the Brahms, especially in the second and fourth movements, shone with folk vitality and pre-Impressionist gropings. The Brahms was the finest of the performances, primarily because idiom suited players. That the music was not totally ingested — given its dark lyricism, juxtaposition of rhythms, intermixture of themes and melancholic power — is understandable. To come as close as the Hamburg String Sextet is commendable. Last night's audience in Kerr Studio, 6102 N. Scottsdale Road, was small, about 175. Cox Air Conditioning 3443 W. Schubert's String Quintet in C (Op. 163) and Max Reger's String Sextet in F (Op. 118) should do better tonight. Performance begins at 8:30 p.m. Members of the sextet, aside from Wuehrer, are: second violin, Lajos Kraxner; violinists, Fritz Poth and Peter Christoph Haensel; and cellists, Horst Jerzewski and Ralph - Betlav Jerzewski.
