The council has voted unanimously to make the use of profanity illegal on . any "street, alley or public place in the city." The ordinance, takes effect Monday and authorities say it will be enforced. Authorities were working out details on penalties for offenses. "What this actually does is open up a whole new door on law enforcement," said Byron Police Chief Dennis Harle- mann. "There's been a lot of complaints in the past," Harlemann explained "but nothing done about it. Mostly it was about kids standing on street corners and cussing a lot. "So the City Council got together Monday night and decided on the ordinance. Now, if we get some more corti- we got something to work Harlemann said it was no particular incident that touched off the movement to pass the ordinance, "just that people were complaining about it all the time."
