THE BRAZOSPORT FACTS FREEPCRT, TEXAS. SUNDAY. NOVEMBER M, Toys offecf sex roles | BAZAAR DATEBOOK "I don't know, son. When I was your age, any boy that played with jacks or dolls risked a punch in the nose. But things are different now, I guess." They are indeed. Increasing awareness of toys' and games' importance in determining sexual roles !hat boys and girls play has put many parents in a bind as they choose presents for their children. While traditional "boys' toys" tend to encourage creativity and independence, the traditional "girls' toys" foster affection and use of the imagination. Many toy manufacturers now market toys and games with both boys and girls in mind as a logical solution to the parental dilemma. "It's especially important in the pro-school age that children have stimulating, imaginative games that teach social discipline and interaction but are not always role- oriented " notes William Garrity, president of a toymaking firm. Most psychiatrists agree that young children should have access to toys and games that help them develop their talents to the fullest without confining them in rigid roles at an early age.
