Shocks' Valley Lead Goes on Line Tonight By JIM VAN VALKENBURG Associated Prei t Sports Writer Maurice John is the most successful coach in Drake basketball history, but he's won just once in 11 games with Wichita's Ralph Miller. Chances are Miller would trade several victories for one tonight, with the Missouri Valley lead at stake at Des Moines. Wichita's fourth-ranked Shockers were upset 76-74 at Bradley on a last second goal by substitute Leon Hall Saturday. Drake got a big victory at St. Louis, 70-57, on McCoy McLemore's 17 points and 25 rebounds. This left Wichita 6-1 in Valley games and 17-4 for the season. Drake is 4-1 and 14-4. The Bulldogs have won four straight In the Valley, two over Bradley, since losing their league opener at Wichita by 18 points. John's coaching mark at Drake is 80 won, 62 lost. His only victory over Miller was in 1961 at Des Moines, 101-88. That Driver Pays Off Big for Nicklaus est and principal, location. Call BR 6:00 P.M. North 6-4180 —21 -H GARDEN CITY MULT I-LIST ! (AP) —Jack Nicklaus remembered something Arnold Palmer showed him two years ago and used it to advantage in winning the $50,000 Phoenix Open, an event Arnie had captured the past three years. "He used a driver on all the holes and won by a mile," Nicklaus recalled as he pocketed the first prize check with a 66 and 72-hole score of 271. The burly 'young pro from Columbus, Ohio, proved his ability with a driver when he blasted 350 yards off the tee on the fourth hole and then hit hole high, six feet away from the hols on the 305-yard fifth hole, That brought a birdie and eagle and sent Nicklaus into the lead to stay en route to his first 1964 victory. "Yw hit • driver and you have a chance for birdies," Jack explained. "You may hit behind trees a couple of times, but overall it's to your advantage to use the driver." Brue, 29, was the last alternate admitted to the field, yet he put together rounds of 70-67.-67-70 for a .274. Until he bogeyed the 15th hole Brue appeared to have a chance of catching Nicklaus, who had three bogeys himself on the back nine after a 30 going out. As it was, bespectacled Bobby collected his largest golf check —$4.000. Deadlocked at 275 were Gary Player of South Africa, making his first 1964 United States start, and Son Diego's Gene Littler. They had 72 and 67 respectively the final day. George Bayer, the third round leader, went over par oil thn final two holes to finish at 276 despite being only two strokes behind Nieklaus through 16. He three-putted both the 17th and 18th greens. Big Jack birdied the 18th to boost his margin. Palmer wound up with 278 and a tie for llth place. SCHREIBER MOTORS 101 N. His best club, that is, until this season's club which is making a tremendous comeback from a last- place league finish last year. Seven of Miller's victories in the rivalry were by 13 points or more, with a high of 30 in a 9161 victory at Des Moines in 1962. Wichita hat one road game left this season, at Cincinnati Saturday. Drake, still has road games at North Texas Thursday at Tulsa Saturday and at Cincinnati Feb. 22. But. tonight's game might prove to be the key to the entire race. A career high of 38 points by Ron Bonham led Cincy's 78-68 victory at North Texas, snapping a five-game Valley losing spell for the Bearcats. Cincy thus avoided a drop to last place and climbed to fifth instead. Tulsa belted New Orleans Loyola 99-76 at Tulsa and Louis- tfille won 85-73 at Mgrquette, giving the Valley a 70-26 r6cord over outside teams this season, a .729 percentage. In non-conference games this week, Cincy is at Houston tonight; Xavier at Louisville Wednesday; Southern Illinois at Louisville and St. Louis at Notre Dame Saturday.
