The answer supplied by the Sher win-Williams Company to us paint dealers, who m turn relay it to their customeis, is this rule .of thumb : 1. Compute the square feet of sunace to be coveied by multiplying the number of feet aiound the house by us average height to the ea\es, then add two feet to the average height. The extra two feet automatically takes care of paint needs tor the gables. 2. Ascertain from your paint dealer aDproximatelv how many square feet each gallon -of under water covers, then divide the total square feet of area by this figure. 3. Similarly, learn the square-feet coverage of a gallon of topcoat house paint, and divide the total square feet of surface by this figure For example, a house 20 by 40 Basement Leaking? A good grade of undercoater, or prime coat, covers about 450 square feet per gallon, .and a top-quality house paint covers 500 square feet per gallon. A little simple arithmetic reveals that four gallons of undercoater and three-and-a-half gallons of house paint are needed to cover. Incidentally, this two-coat system is recommended for previously painted houses. A prime coat is the best base for a top coating, no matter how many times the house has been painted. There is another factor to consider, however, before ordering paint. It is the condition of the surface. If it is unusually rough, heavily textured, diy and porous, it may require 20 per cent more paint, according to the Glidden Company. Concrete block, for instance, usually takes even more— up to 50 per cent more paint— for the first coat. Since there is more surface to cover on corrugated metal than on smooth metal, it requires one-third more paint. For the same reason, narrow lap siding uses up to 10 per cent more paint than wide lap No matter what kind of surface you are painting, allow 48 hours' "drying time between coats.
