Contaminated water can be reused Alton Evening Telegraph Thursday, Jan. 7, 1971 A43 By Telgraph Mertiall Service WAS HINGTON - Water tliat flows as waste products from this country's urban centers can be treated and re-used in irrigation and for other purposes, according to an Agricultural Department soil chemist. Dr.. James C. Lance, a soil chemist with USDA's Agriculture Research Service, said that the waste flow from cities can become an important water source which, after treatment, can be used for irrigation of crops not d i r e c t ly consumed by humans. "Also," Dr. Lance said, "the secondary waste water can be given additional treatment to permit irrigation of vegetable crops, parks and golf courses, and used for recreational lakes and even for industrial and municipal purposes." Soil filtration is an effective method of reclaiming the water from sewage effluent, Dr. Lance said. He said the effluent can be applied to land with basins, furrows or sprinklers, and then the reclaimed water can be Fantastic Savings Select Groups...All Sizes, But Not Every Size in Every Style! 114 WEST THIRD ST. He e x pi a i n e d that biodegradable material is consumed by soil microorganisms. Disease and basteriar, being in a hostile and competitive environment, generally do not survive after a few yards of travel. Dr. Lance also said that viruses stick to soil particles and move only if the soil moves, while phosphates, flourides and heavy metals also remain largely in the soil. The program is under the direction of community services of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Leading the five sessions is the Rev. John Graham, of Alton. Dr. R. Sumagang, staff physician at Alton State, will be assisting him for a question and answer session each night. The program is open to interested community residents, as well as employes at the hospital. Applicants should call the hospital to pre- register, so an adequate number of materials can be ordered. "Under favorable hydro- geologic conditions, such systems can yield reclaimed water at a fraction of the cost of equivalent in-plant treatment," the chemist said. Snow plow bill denied CULPEPER, Va. "reclaiming waste water by such ground water recharge is also esthetically more attractive than in-plant treatment" The ARS maintains the U.S. Laboratory in Phoenix, Arizona. At the Phoenix project, conditions are right for ground-water recharge and results show that reclaimed water meeting standards for unrestricted irrigation and body - contact recreation is being produced. Dr. Lance said that such a system of 1,000 acres could handle in the year 2000 all of the secondary waste flow from Phoenix and adjacent cities, a projected annual 300,000 acre-feet, "Reclaiming waste water by soil percolation and ground • water recharge is important not only in arid zones but also in humid regions where applying waste water to land is an attractive alternative to discharging it in streams, lakes and other surface waters," Dr. Lance said. *"**. 1 f " J £ ' J * w fti «.
