SPORT Sunday at Bracknell CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS BRACKNELL BEES' PLAYER First Line LINES Bees in with a good chance BRACKNELL BEES SoothemM ilgftsh First Division Cud battle to decide this year's overall Cup winnrsB Thefirstleg of the Cup Saturday at ths Sdhdwk' dt Hull tlNft SticoncllBQ tit the Bees" lair at Bracknell The wfimer wtHbethe phi looks I -j-1 of the $pi I 'A REALLY TOUGH WEEKEND' Dale Lambert Humberside Seahawks' coach 4 Mark Goldby (aged 21): Defenceman Played junior and senior ice hockey with Nottingham Panthers Limited ice time spurred him to join the Bees although he has to commute from Nottingham to play Will prove valuable once he settles into mode of play Possesses great potential but travel and work commitments have hindered his 19 Darin Fridgen (aged Forward replacement from Ontario Canada mid-November and has already established himself as dynamic and hard-hitting player after scoring 12 goals in his second weekend Has given the offence much-needed weight and firepower Experience as captain of a United university team last year is a bonus for the Bees import arrived BRACKNELL coach Jamie Crapper hopes a burst of tough training this week will give his team the edge needed to beat the Seahawks After thrashing by Oxford he knows the Northern champions can be beaten He is convinced the Bees could have won game against Humberside had the match against Basingstoke the day before not sapped the energy of his players Now icing three lines Crapper said his squad has the depth and ability to gain revenge week we are working on our defensive zone coverage to bring the puck out quicker The second line have been doing it in Eractice but not in said Crapper believes Lambert is foolish to dismiss the threat posed by the British players is wrong Mark Lewis was the leading British scorer at Southampton and we have defencemen like Mark Goldby who can carry the puck up the rink and has a good will try to shut down Mackie and create opportunities for our British He added: at Humberside we are going to have the keep the goals against us down We will have to cover our net a bit more picking up on the The Bees will then do their main damage on Sunday at the Bracknell rink players realise what they have to do this weekend but by no means will it be easy If we work hard we should get the Crapper reckoned ON THE GOAL-LINE 21 Mike Kellond (aged 21): Goal-tender Ht Wt 1921b Born in Vancouver British Columbia he is now a British citizen following the return of his father to England Has Jayed with Oxford and Cardiff efore signing with the Bees last season Currently the number one goaltender for the Bees he has been working on the finer points of his position in pursuit of being recognised nationally Crapper believes Kellond can be more effective and needs competition for his place to spur him on 20 Jamie Crapper (aged 28): Forward Ht: Wt: 1851b coach and Canadian import Came to Britain 1983 and scored 500 points in four seasons of Premier Division before becoming Bracknell cap-tain last year strengthened offence means Crapper no longer needs concentrate on goal-scoring but has increased his role in setting up attacks and cross-rink support 12 Mark Lewis Forward Played with Southampton Vikings aged just 14 and was the top British scorer last season in Division One After brief spell with Cardiff following Southampton rink closure joined Bracknell because of the easier travelling Good puck sense and scoring ability although has current fitness problems 14 Russell Martin (aged Forward Ht Wt 1601b Joined the Bees from Brighton as the youngest player on the team last season Worked hard over the summer and is beginning to come into his own Although currently recovering from the flu he has done well when on the ice has been showing more confidence and I have got more confidence in said Crapper 3 Paul Morganti (aged 25): Defenceman Ht Wt: 1801b Returned to Great Britain aged 16 after 10 years in Canada Joined Bees after two seasons taking Cardiff Devils into Division One Though not a flashy player he is very steady at the back Has been more effective over last four weeks although work commitments have clashed with practices 11 Mark Gibson (aged 26): Defenceman Ht Wt 1801b First of the Richmond players to sign with the Bees last season Has a reputation as a hard player and stable in defence His job is to clear the opposition from the defensive zone we made him assistant captain he seems to have taken up the role well and is playing a lot said Crapper 6 Martin Weddell (aged 31): Defenceman Ht Wt 2101b An old hand at hockey with experience in Grimsby Telford and Oxford and is Bracknell ice rink manager Not the most agile of players but uses his big frame well in defence Possesses a hard shot and great enthusiasm Is slowly being eased out of the Bees to make way for new players and reduce his playing commitments 10 Phil Ray (aged 27): Defence-man Ht Wt 1751b Joined the Bees from Brighton last season where he was captain 'and voted most valuable player He has come on strongly since joining the Bees and more recently his playing has shown even greater improvements Works well with Mark Gibson when switching on to the offensive DEFENCEMAN or import from the first line doubles up in the third line to give strength and support Crapper intends to recruit more players this season and flexibility in the third line leaves room to slot new talent into the team and develop the potential THE HUMBERSIDE SEAHAWKS SQUAD 16 Andy Young (aged 26): Forward Ht 2001b He joined the Bees this season from Division One Richmond Flyers Is using his size more to win battles with opponents and support Reilly and Lewis His job is to stir up the defence in the corners and has acquired the taste for scoring goals A British Airways engineer living in Bracknell 7 Mark Fielding (aged 23): Forward Asked to join the Bees last month after moving to work in Reading Although a former Cleveland Bomber further education has kept him away from the ice for four years and he is having to re-master old skills has got to find his skating feet again but even so he is a good said Crapper SAVE ON expect it will be a really tough Although flying high at the top of the English First Division League Humberside have not rested on their laurels particularly after lhe by Oxford City Stars defence with ease but sees Changes have been made the main threat coming from with Dale Lambert moved up goal-scorers John Hobson front and Ian Watson fallen and imports Jamie Crapper back into defence attempts to close down offensive dangermen failed miserably at Oxford and the team have adopted a zonal defence rLambert believes Humber- I and Darin Fridgen will dump the puck and shut them down in their own he said will show the Bees no respect give them no room to manoeuvre Some of my team are a little too tentative about taking on Crapper in case he makes them look silly But I say: shut him down and respect his SEAHAWKS' LINE-UP THE SECRET of the Humberside success this season lies in the fact that although the club was only created this year virtually all its team have played ice hockey together for over a decade For when the Humberside Ice Arena was opened in Hull on September 14 the old Grimsby squad defected across the Humber to the sparkling new rink Already a potent force the old Grimsby team were given what a previous lack of funds had denied them imports Grimsby had climbed into the Heineken Division One during the 19845 season only to be smashed to pieces by teams who could afford the experience and talent of imported players The team suffered an early blow when personal problems forced import Eddie Lee to return to Canada But his loss turned out a dark cloud with a silver lining for his replacement was the prolific goalscoring Canadian forward Mark Mackie aged 24 He came over from Toronto to join the Kirkcaldy Kestrels in the 19867 season and became their top-scorer Mackie moved to the Peterborough Titans last year and in the same division as the Bees chalked up the fourth biggest goal tally of that division two places below skipper Jamie Crapper At Humberside he combined forces with fellow Canadian Dale Lambert installed as Ice Hockey Development Officer Lambert now aged 29 first played in Britain with Division Two Medway and helped them win that championships Versatile He stayed with Medway until taking up his Humberside post and is recognised as a highly versatile player who can play forward or defence He often ices a full 60 minutes Mackie is mainly a forward who also plays long shifts on the first line while doubling up on the third He takes a couple minutes to get into his stride during a game Former Grimsby captain Andy Steel aged 24 Joins these two in the first line offence Steel led the old team in their Division One days but tried to further his ice hockey career earlier this year with a rapid succession of moves between Telford Medway and Deeside He headed straight for home when the new Humberside team was born First line defence consists of assistant skipper Martin Woolliss aged 24 and former Grimsby Buffaloes captain and 22-year-old John Bloomer Bloomer is the long-shift muscle on defence a good skater with a hard shot and over six years playing experience Continuity The second line offence is anchored on Sean Blissett aged 22 and leading British scorer He has played 12 years having started as a junior and is the leading scorer in the nonimport league Not a blue line slapshot merchant he prefers to work the puck in close to the goal His line-colleagues on the attack are former British junior international player Mike Sleeth aged 25 and high-scoring John Patterson Defencemen are Ian Watson aged 25 and Lee Barley another Grimsby lad returned from the Peterborough Titans this year The third line consists of Graham Patterson brother recently recovered from a broken ankle Cliff Perrin and Matthew Campbell who also came back to Humberside this season Their defence is drawn from the first line main netminder is 28-year-old Steve Yorston who tops the averages in the English First Division this year He is another long-serving ex-Grimsby player and is backed-up by second net-minder Darren BladLs SESIIAWKg ToacTF 'Dale Lambert is far from complacent about the outcome of this English First Division Cup final despite his 13-3 defeat of Bracknell in October He said: 13-3 was not a true indication of the way the game wenLJWe had all the breaks Bracknell had none It was more of a three goal difference than HUMBERSIDE Ice Arena 18 John Hobson (aged 21): Forward IJt: Wt 1701b Moved from Premier Division Nottingham Panthers to Bracknell in July and took over captaincy of Bees last month Has proved a hard-working nifty skater and a dangerman close to goals One of his big strengths is his consistency good team leader and a British player the others can look up says Crapper Second Line 8 Jason Reilly (aged 17): Forward Ht Wt 1701b Although young has a wealth of experience as Under-16 England player and is on trial for this Under-19 squad Joined the Bees this season from Division One Richmond Flyers Nippy with a good puck sense he is useful on the power-play But lack of weight often allows heavier opponents to knock him off the puck Third Line 5 Scott Wakelin (aged 19): Forward Ht Wt 1701b This former Brighton Royal joined the Bees last season and earned the Coach's Award for hard work dedication and overall improvement Has good defensive skills not always found in a forward But his penalties this season have hurt the Bees played well against Chelmsford and he is working said Crapper SALE PRICE £9995 £13995 £11995 £14995 £24995 £24995 £28995 ASP £439S £4495 ams £3795-illM
