A-10 Alton Evening Telegraph Thursday, Jan. 7, 1971 Growth hormone productio n long way off VICTOR BUONO Top actor booked for Blackburn CARLINVILLE - A distinguished actor of stage, screen and television comesto Blackburn College on Jan. 23, when Victor Buono will present a dramatic program as part of the College's 1970-71 Special Events series. The program is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the new Bothwell Conservatory of Music on the campus. "A magnificent specimen of the art of multicharac- terization," was just one of the recent "raves" critics used in describing Victor Buono's superb stage performances. He has won three Best Actor of the Year awards in the theater. Similarly hailed in other areas of the entertainment media, Buono won an Academy Award nomination for his debut motion picture performance in the memorable "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and was subsequently acclaimed in a number of feature films including "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte," "The Greatest Story Ever Told," "Four for Texas" and "The Silencers." Television has also been quick to recognize this exceptional talent, and Buono has guest starred on over 65 major television programs, including The Joey Bishop Show, Batman, The Man from Uncle, and The Wild, Wild West. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., has left New England Baptist Hospital after an overnight checkup on his back, broken in a 1964 airplane crash. A Kennedy medical spokesman said after the senator's departure Wednesday there would be no comment on his condition. WASHINGTON (AP) - A scientist whose small agency collects a precious natural hormone for treating dwarfism in children says it. will be up to five years before mass production of a new manmade substitute eliminates need for his services. Dr. Salvatore Raiti, director of the federally supported National Pituitary Agency in Baltimore, said he would be inclined to hope success by San Francisco researchers in making the hormone in a laboratory "would immediately put our agency out of service. "That would mean that more children with this kind of dwarfis7n were already being helped by the synthetic product," he said in a telephone interview Wednesday. "But it may take up to five years or so before the new laboratory-synthesized hormone becomes available widely as a commercial product." U n t i 1 — an d perhaps beyond— that time, Haiti said, his agency of seven staff other purposes. Raiti said his nonprofit agency collects and supplies natural hormone to some 500 American children and youths afflicted with hypo- pituitarism — a form of dwarfism characterized by a deficiency of the natural hormone. But. he said an estimated 10,000 patients could use the natural hormone, which must be administered for at least several years, if enough were available. His agency, he said, collects about. 75,000 pituitary glands a year —and uses 60,000 of them for extraction of growth hormone, and sends the others, without, further processing, to researchers, including the San Francisco team of Dr. C. II. Li and Dr. D. Yamashiro. That team achieved the synthesis breakthrough reported Wednesday.
