POOR 4A Ogde'n Standard-Examiner, Tuesday, October 5, 1971 Bugs Infest •-• :• W Navy Admits ^NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The iNavy has been told that some ^90 per cent of its warships are ^infested with a variety, of-bugs which are sabotaging morale and supplies. _ The Navy's preventive medicine unit in charge of pest "control on vessels west of the Rockies and east of the Azores says the Navy vessels are plagued by bedbugs, crab lice and even rats. "Cockroaches are the biggest problem" Lt. Lance Sholdt, the unit's entomologist, said Monday Sholdt said a unit study shows that about 90 psr cent of the country's warships suffer from some type of infestation and that many have "serious and extensive" infestations. He classified serious infestations as those . involving hundreds of thousands of cockroaches. DISEASE, DAMAGE The insects can spread disease Sholdt said, but another problem is the damage they do to ship's supplies. The worst problem, he said, is that the presence. of the insects aboard ship leads to low morale among crewmen. Worst of the offenders, said Sholdt, is the German cockroach, which multiplies rapidly in the high heat and humidity aboard ship. Sholdt said one of the cockroaches can have as many as 400,000 descendants scurrying about at the end of one year. While the unit report shows older ships to have the worst problem, Sholdt said even the country's newest aircraft carrier, the John F. Kennedy, has reported trouble with insects. : Sholdt said the problem of, shipboard insects can be eased' by more efficient control techniques and equipment. J1LJED SUITOR SUES FOR GIFTS RALEIGH, W. Va. (UPI) —Claiming 'he was jilted through no fault of his own, Melzah Moore sued in Raleigh County Circuit Court here for the return of $3,613 in gifts from his former fiancee.
