PAY MONTHLY A-8 Alton Evening Telegraph Thursday, Jan, 7, 1971 Black Nutcracker is great By SANDRA HAGGERTY "How come we keep seeing all these colored people, Mommte?" The little blonde girl gave us a look of puzzlement as "we stood in the theater lobby during the intermission of the Nutcracker ballet. The mother was woefully embarrassed and tried in vain to change the subject. The other people in the lobby, most of whom happened to be white, became silent, seemingly embarrassed for the unexpected faux pas. Similar incidents have occurred on numerous occasions, and smiling at my group of mulli-hucd nieces and nephews I said to them quietly, but distinctly, "Okay, come all ye colored people: back to our seats." The children's eyes shone as they tried to suppress their giggles — for this particular group of black children, the word colored is passe, laughable. The surrounding crowd was obviously relieved and smiled as the children obediently headed back into the theater. The fact of the mailer is, the little blonde's observation was well taken. For not only were there more than the usual handful of blacks in the audience, but there were even blacks in the performance. Can you imagine black snowflakes? Even for me, this appearance was notably different, for in all the years that I have gone to see the Nutcracker — the 19th- century Russian ballet that has become a traditional part of Christmas Entertainment — this was the first year I had seen blacks perform in a professional rendilion of the ballet. Blacks have not formerly participated in classical ballet: for a number of obvious reasons —among them, lack of exposure, training and money. Many contemporary blacks feel that a ballet such as the Nutcracker (a white Russian ballet) is not relevant, to today's blacks. Bah, humbug! Not only is the magical fairy tale a delight to all children, but the Nutcracker is, indeed, "one of dancing's most beautiful gifts to the world." Tchaikovsky's music is relevant to the world. Classical ballet, is an arena that more young blacks should be exposed to. This Is certainly not to say that we should not have a knowledge and apprecialion of our own ethnic dance herilage — African ballet and tribal traditions. On the contrary, the ideal would be lo have an awareness and appreciation of the best of all worlds. The discipline involved in classical ballet, instruction is particularly impressing and the whole of dance instruction comes to mind when I think of the "needed arena" for black girls to excel in, which could be comparable to athletics for boys. All young people who struggle through ballet lessons cannot and will not become great stars, but the discipline and the gaining of an appreciation of technique and grace would be invaluable. Executing a flawless dance maneuver takes as much training and talent as completing a football pass. Watching the mesmerized faces of my young Ihealur party as they watched the Nutcracker performance solidified its relevancy. Any and everything that is a part of this world is relevant to our children. \udie Murphy is cleared LOS ANGELES (AP) — Audie Murphy, the most decorated U.S. soldier of World War II, has been cleared of charges that he carried blackjacks illegally. Superior Court Judge .James Kilts dismissed the charges Tuesday, saying the 45-year- old Medal of Honor winner Is authorized to carry blackjacks because he is a special officer on the police force at Port Hueneme northwest of Los Angeles. Officers said they found two blackjacks in Murphy's car last May 28 when they arrested him for investigation of assault and battery against a dog trainer. A jury acquitted him of those charges in October. Alton Evening Telegraph Thursday, Jan. 7, 1971 A-9 "I Mind your BUSINESS WAS GOOD! . . . SAVE $6] NOW money By PETER WEAVER Q — I will be remodeling my kitchen in the very near future and must make a decision about a microwave range. I'd love to have One but I have some doubts about their safety (radiation leakage). What's the current thinking on this? — Mrs. A.G., Los Angeles. A — A recent federal standard established a much tighter radiation emission rate for microwave ovens. There's no evidence of dangerous radiation coming from microwave ovens now in use. The Environmental Health Service has a free booklet on microwave oven radiation you can get by writing: Bureau of Radiological Health, 12720 Twinbrook Parkway, Rockville, Md. 20852. These ovens cook through a completely different energy method. Experts warn that it takes about, six months for the average person to really make the switch hi cooking habits to get. full use of these much speedier ranges. The Amana Co., for example, doesn't like to sell a microwave range unless the buyer agrees to some lessons from a technician. Local electric utilities can provide demonstrations. Q—Recently the newspaper had an article which said Sweden has discontinued importing beef from the United States because our cattlemen inject a certain hormone into the animals for fattening. The Swedish government claims this hormone causes cancer in test animals. Is this true? — Mrs. A.C., Silver Spring, Md. A — The Food and Drug Administration says traces of DES, the hormone that's added lo animal feed to induce quick fattening, has been found in a few animals ready for slaughter. Regulations governing this powerful drug slate that it must be discontinued from the feed at least 48 hours before slaughtering. Normally, the 48 hours provide ample time for the hormone lo leave the animal's syslem. FDA says the National Cattlemen's Assn. is setting up self-regulation procedures. If this doesn't work and more residues of DES are found in meat, FDA says it will have to take over direct regulation of the drug. Q—The Nader Report on poultry contends that some 40 per cent of the chickens used for food are cancerous. Is there any substance to tills? — Mrs. D.L.D., Charlottesville, Va. A — The Nader Report protested a recommendation by the secretary of agriculture's advisory committee that the standards for passing chickens with leukosis (form of cancer) be lowered. The surgeon general felt the .standards should not be lowered and no changes were made. Chickens found with leukosis arc automatically banned from the market place. There have also been charges that chickens have been injected wilh a chemical lo disguise leukosis. This vaccine, however, is a sub- st a n c e developed from turkeys designed to ward off the virus suspected of causing leukosis. ODD NIGHT STANDS, all styles and many finishes. After two years the carpet separated from UK- backing and formed ripples. The carpet company representative tried to stretch it — to no avail. Do we have any recourse'? — F.W.M., Dubuque, la. A — Not much. If you check your guarantee closely, you'll probably find that the "surface fibers" (not the backing) are guaranteed for 15 years. During the bonding process when the carpet was made, one element got out of shape. Then, after it was put down, moisture might have caused one element to shrink and separate. Tliis can happen to the best of carpets. The only way to avoid the problem is to buy from a reputable carpet store that will replace a carpet under these circumstances. Most carpet manufacturers will not. (Peter Weaver welcomes questions from readers for possible use in his column. Please send letters to him in care of this newspaper.)
