-THE UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1987- 1 5 People King Carlos III LOS ANGELES (AP) — A statue of Spain's 18th- century King Carlos III has a new home in time for next week's visit of the current monarch, Juan Carlos I, despite objections from Hispanic City Council members. Juan Carlos gave the statue to the city in 1976 in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial, noting that Carlos HI. ordered establishment of the original pueblo of Los Angeles. It was duly situated on a pedestal in MacArthur Park. But when Mayor Tom Bradley recently asked for a SI O.dOO appropriation to move the statue to the historic Olvera Street Plaza, Hispanic City Council members raised a fuss. Richard Alatorre and Gloria Molina said Hispanics would perceive the statue as a symbol of colonial Spanish tyranny, and they persuaded the council Wednesday to delete the relocation funding. Despite that action, Carlos III was transferred to his new home, a mayoral spokesman said Thursday. Sandy Rowland, director of the Great Lakes regional office of the nalionl Humane Society, declined comment "since it's a legal issue." PHncess Anne BRASILIA, Bra/.il (AP) — Princess Anne of England m:t with President Jose Sarncy and visited a children's hcmc during a visit to Brazil's modern capital. The princess, on a seven-day visit to this country, also to tired a home for needy children Friday and met with members of Brazil's diplomatic corps. During her private meeting with Samey in the presidential palace, she gave him a framed photo of herself and received a copy in English of the book "Talcs of Rain and Sunlight" written by Sarncy, a poet and author. She leaves Tuesday for the Netherlands. Sam the chimp Amy Grant i NASHVILLE, Term. (AP) — Pop-gospel singer Amy BANON, Ohio (AP) — Sam the chimp may become the Grant's new baby, a 7-pound, ll'/j-ounce boy named next president of the Humane Society in Ohio, thanks to a * r * — L - "—'— *"" u — - —"-• ""'•"" '"" * l!c legal omission noticed by a lawyer. Attorney James Sheets, who represented Sam's owner, Kenneth Harris, in a suit filed by the Humane Society, said Friday that he discovered during his research that the national Humane Society had not formally registered its name with the Ohio Secretary of State. Sheets filed to incorporate under the name, and on Friday, received the papers giving him exclusive business incorporation rights in Ohio to use the name Humane Society 'of the United States Inc. The organization will elect a board of directors, defend its use of the corporate name and set about a mission of representing all owners of exotic animals, Sheets said. "I suspect my man Sam's going to be the president," Sheets said. In June, Sheets successfully defended Harris, a tavern owner, against the Humane Society's charges that Harris kept Sam in a poorly lit, dirty cage and allowed patrons of his bar to abuse Sam by giving the chimp beer and cigarettes to smoke. 1 Matthew Garrison Chapman, has a great voice, loo, his athcr said. Both mother and baby, her first, were doing fine after the jirth Friday afternoon at an undisclosed hospital, said Belinda Scruggs of Reunion Records. "I think he's got a great voice and we're expecting a great uture," said the newborn's father, singer-songwriter Gary "hapman. "We're thankful to the Lord." Ringo Starr ATLANTA (AP) — British rock stars of the 1960s and '70s will reunite when a downtown restaurant owned by two of them opens tonight. Former Beatle Ringo Starr and former Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman, part owners of Brasserie, a British- style restaurant in Peachtrcc Center, will be joined by singer Rod Stewart for the occasion. Aspirin may aid in plant reproduction ! WASHINGTON (AP) — When a !voodoo lily gets into a reproductive (mood, it takes some aspirin and calls up la beetle in the morning. 1 That's the finding of a group of scientists, who investigated the chemical basis for a rise in temperature detected in the flowering organ of the voodoo lily. In research conducted at Modesto, Calif., the researchers found that salicylic acid, the chemical in common aspirin, will trigger a temperature increase in an organ called the appendix, a part of the voodoo lily flower. The temperature rise, said Ilya Raskin of the E.I. du Pont dc Nemours Co. v causes the\flower to give off a strong aroma which is attractive to the carrion beetle, the primary pollinating insect for the voodoo lily. Raskin said that in the experiment, he and his collegues applied salicylic' acid to the appendix just before the flower was to open. The next day, after receiving about 4'/i hours of light* said Raskin, the appendix temperature rose quickly by about IS degrees. i He said the. heat accelerates the vol a- tilization of chemicals to produce a "strong putrescent odor" which is attractive to the carrion beetle. Once the beetle is inside the flower, said Raskin, the plant even works to keep it there. After sunset, he said, the flower closes'up and a secondepisode''6f hcat- irtf'occuri in a lowKF portion of the flower, deep inside the pollination chamber. "It heats up at night to keep the pollinators happy inside the flower," said Raskin. Pollen moved by insects from the male to the female portion of flowers cause plants to produce seeds. The temperature rise of the voodoo lily appendix was first described by* researchers in the 18th century, but the chemical basis for it was not understood. A scientist in 1937 suggested that the temperature increase was triggered by a substance called "calorigcn" produced in the male part of the flower. Experiments by Raskin and his team of Axel Ehmann, Wayne. R. Melandcr ; ; and JJastiaan J.D. Meeu§ez' ( cpnfirrned ' this and used mass spectral analysis to identify-'Salicylic acid.
