November 27, 1956 SUgonn (Llpprr Novemkr 27, 1956 Radar Picket Ship Named For Duron/, Algona Sailor A destroyer escort which has been undergoing a 12 month conversion to a radar picket ship, will be recormnissinnc'd in the Mare Island Naval Ease, Vallejo. Cal., on Dec. 7. The ship,"-the USS Durant is named in honor of Kenneth W. Durant, pharmacists mate 3/C. USN. from Algona, who was kill- ed Nov. 3, 1942, serving with the 2nd Battalion, Fifth Marines, during action against Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, while administering aid to wounded Marines Jn an offensive action. He received his Silver Star medal posthttrnously for conspicuous gallaritry. The ship was built in. Houston, Texas, in 1042, and was sponsored by Mrd Soloman R. Durant, moth- er of the Algona sailor. Following commissioning the ship made eight trans-Atlantic escort crossings to North African ports. After the war the 1JSS Durant was decommissioned, but was reactivated in 1952, and loaned to the Coast Guard as a weather ship. The prospective commanding officer is Lt. Cmdr. Harry E. Carter, USN, Los Angeles. St. Benedict By Mrs Philip Arndorfer Early the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 21, % Mr and Mrs Dan Frot'hlich, Sr. of St. Benedict and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Francis Frochlich of Algona, motored to Oklahoma to the home of Mr and Mrs San Cord Mitchell, the latter a daughter of the Dan Froehlichs and a sister to Francis. The visitors are making the acquaintance of a daughter born a few weeks ago to the Mitchells. They will return Saturday. At noon on Thanksgiivng Day the Francis Froehlich children, gathered at the home of Mr imr,l Mrs Frank Grandgenelt for dinner. They ure grandchildren of Mrs Grandgenett.
