CAMPBELL Business and Financial Editor Sometime in the we hours of Sunday morning, the jolly: Easter bunny will come skulking into town, pummeling an* occasional Doberman pinscher into meek submission, and ' mugging a few patrolmen caught off-guard on their lonely '. tour of duty. : His mission: To plant a dozen or so gaily colored Easter eggs around the family yard which, within an hour after their discovery, will be ground into the living room carpet with the thorough-" ness of a dentist packing a hollow wisdom tooth. By noon Sunday the family : cat will have shredded a half dozen cot* ton chickens under the mistaken im*' pression that she has stumbled on a fortune in catnip mice, and Rover— with ; two dozen jelly beans under his belt-^; will be begging to go outside to eat grass. -• As far removed from the religious' significance of Easter as the Chipmunks are from the spirit • of Christmas, this annual traffic in bunny-inspired toys7» candy, cards, clothes, gee-gaws and gimmicks is still a" major factor in spring retailing. AND PHILOSOPHERS, if they wish, may make some*; thing of the fact that it is the pagan end of Easter, rather*" than the Christian end, that makes all the money. : As is usual, a discount score clerk said here yesterday; 1 candy— in one noxious form or another— remains the runr:" away bestseller this year, and the range is all the way from;'; the traditional egg-shaped jelly bean to full-scale replicas of crouching rabbits sculptured out of living milk chocolate. : and guaranteed to inflame the most dormant case of acne,;; And, while boxed candy was at ine time as closely identi- • fied with Easter as lacy love missives were with Valentine's . Day, these have yielded to the prewraped basket as the;; biggest selling "packaged" Easter present. ';* LINED WITH PAPER "grass" and festooned with a baf- : fling array of candy eggs, chicken and rabbit shaped cotton toys and miscellaneous attractions, the baskets, generally; range in price from about 49 cents for a Spartan model,-. to $3.95 for a version that does everything but light up in" the dark. In terms of specific volume, another discount house cleric^ guessed, the two biggest sellers in the candy-egg line ar£° the highly colored, sugar-coated eggs which range hi price from about 1 to 10 cents apiece and taste like a Styrofoam life raft, and the familiar chocolate-covered marshmallowLX egg with its texture that is slightly reminiscent of a gum:: eraser. r The whole irony of the multimillion-dollar Easter gimmick ,' business, of course, is that the symbolism being hawked^ about town with such zeal this week has about as much to j ° do with Easter as it does with General Motors' annual reC port. It actually has its roots in spring festivities that pre- iD date Christianity by many centuries. •— THE EGG GOT INTO the act through the simple transference of its symbolism as a sign of fertility to the syn> bolism of spring, itself, as a time of reproduction— a point that is, perhaps, soft-pedaled if it pops up among the kiddies-'° this weekend. J " Unfortunately, the rabbit's role in all this horseplay isn't : » quite as easily explained, although in terms of fertility^" the buck-toothed rodent admittedly has a track record that can't be lightly dismissed. As far as can be determined, however* the ancient Egyptians were apparently the first to tie the rabbit— or the Un— into their spring rituals as a symbol of whatever it was they were trying to prove. -~ And we must assume that, at some point in Egyptian his- - tpry, a harrassed father dismissed his child's probing ques- •','£ tions about the presence of the spring eggs around the house with the off-hand explanation that "the Easter Un brought them." PAGAN-INSPIRED or not though, this aspect of Easter represents the only celebration the world has that ushers in a specific season— a season that has become synonymous- with purity, freshness and new beginnings. ^ ; And if, in the celebration of it, a few million dollars are" spent in the foolishness if provoking gastric distress via chocolate eggs, it may be a cheap price to pay. 47 86% 85V2 85% —1 22 26% 26 26% + 1/4 58 23V2 23V4 23V4 — 74 33% 333/4 333/4 ... : ZlOO 76'/4 74'/a 76% 4- % 4- 1/2 30% 30% 30% - 27V8 . cl ?— Callad. x— Ex dividend, v— Ex divii dend and Mle; In full. x^l»-Ex dlstrlb]j- 1911 ' 5 ' xw-Wlthout wa?- PSInd pfl.08 PSInd pfl.04 WnUn Bf4.90 WestsEl i, West United Corp Unit Fin Cal Un Fruit 1.40 18% 18% 531/4 51% 52% 15% 15V4 r. ou ~ W l warrants. wd-When dlsi hen '« ued - n<*-Next day Pueb Sup PR Cem 1.10 PugSPL 1.68 Westvaco Weyerh 18 20% 20V2 20% . v|—In bankruptcy being reorganized under the Bankruptcy Act, or sacurlties issumed by such com- issu* tubiect to In- T3X« 513/4 51V2 51% - % Un t 'Pk Min LJSForS 2.72g U5Fr«t 1.25a Over the counter RCA cv pf 4 Pf 3.50 Quotations from the NASD are ntattva lnter.dtalar prices as of [matefv 10:30. a.m. Inter-dealer ange throughout the day.
